This exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to start a career in healthcare science in the NHS.

Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship Level 2.

This 18 month programme aims to develop competent Healthcare Science Assistants who can support healthcare science associates, practitioners, clinical scientists and others in Respiratory and Cardiac Science.

The post holder will undertake work based training in conjunction with the Healthcare Science Assistant Training Programme, supported by the Academy of Healthcare Science.

As a Healthcare Science Assistant Apprentice you'll support colleagues in healthcare science. You will be trained to perform a variety of Healthcare Assistant support roles in a busy department, which will involve meeting, communicating and working with people from all backgrounds.

This post does not guarantee permanent employment on completion; however the apprenticeship will provide you with valuable skills and experience to apply for future healthcare science supporting positions within the NHS.

You will be working directly with patients, preparing them for diagnostic tests, undertaking diagnostic investigations, inputting data, following procedures, ordering stock and any other associated administrative duties.

There will be classroom sessions and work based assessment which contributes to the learning element of the programme.

Apprentices will complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their learning and skills in practice in accordance with the apprenticeship framework.

The healthcare science level 2 apprenticeship is suited to those who are interested in the welfare of others and have a caring attitude to other people, with a keen interest in science. We are looking for an individual who can put the patient's needs before their own, be honest, friendly and have a professional attitude to work.

The work will be based in busy departments; therefore will suit individuals who like to deal with a variety of tasks. Through your working practices you will apply dignity, respect and maintain confidentiality, you will work well in a team, be courteous, sympathetic and professional. It is also important that you maintain a safe working environment and contribute to the safeguarding of patients.

This position will be based mainly at UHCW however on occasion will require rotation to St Cross Hospital Rugby.

An opportunity has arisen within our expanding Cardiac Investigations Department for an Apprentice Assistant HCS. Due to the development of a community diagnostic centre we are looking to expand our workforce and this apprenticeship will provide an individual with the training, development and experience to apply for future assistant healthcare scientist positions.

To support the provision of community diagnostic services by providing a range of diagnostic procedures across various sites at UHCW NHS Trust and other sites in the local area under the direction of the Respiratory and Cardiac Healthcare Science Teams. In this role you will be primarily based in Cardiac Investigations.

Apprentices will undertake an initial structured departmental induction and training programme throughout the apprenticeship to enable them to:
  • Provide support and assistance to Cardiac and Respiratory Healthcare Scientists across various sites throughout the Trust including the community diagnostic centre.
  • To undertake cardiac diagnostic procedures such as 12 lead ECG, blood pressure measurements and application and removal of ambulatory monitors and event recorders.
  • To undertake a range of respiratory diagnostic procedures such as spirometry, capillary blood gas measurement and the issue of sleep monitoring equipment.
  • To assist other Healthcare Scientists with more advanced Cardiac and Respiratory procedures.

With further experience as a Healthcare Science Associate, you could progress your career and apply to train as a Healthcare Science Practitioner (by taking an undergraduate BSc (Hons) programme.)
