Provide direct services to international students to support their persistence and success. Partner regularly with other staff in other campus offices dedicated to the support of Denison students.

Essential Job Functions
Denison University seeks applicants for an International Student Advisor to assist in managing Student and Exchange Visitor Information (SEVIS) data, support Denison’s federally mandated reporting to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and assist with advising the international student population. Provide direct services to international students to support their persistence and success. Partner regularly with other staff in other campus offices dedicated to the support of Denison students.

We seek candidates to do the following:

Provide support for international students on the following:
  • Serve on a team of Designated School Officials (DSO) for F-1 students to ensure compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program;

  • Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Global Programs, advise students on immigration, visa applications, tax filing and employment authorization.
  • Assist in timely and accurate updates of Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records
  • Assist in maintaining the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) database – fall and spring semester registration of student records, updates for changes in majors/minors, campus and home addresses, phone numbers, etc.
  • Assist with employment authorization application process; Optional Practical Training and Curricular Practical Training for internships. Assist with SEVIS reporting requirements for students during 12 months of OPT. Assist and advise on OPT STEM Extension application process; review initial training plans and biannual review of self-evaluations.
  • Support institutional compliance with government regulations that impact international students; provide appropriate application of the Code of Federal Regulations regarding F-1 nonimmigrant student visas; provide support for Social Security applications & State of Ohio ID’s
  • Assist with visa applications and denials.

2. Coordinate ongoing education for students about their legal rights and responsibilities in order to remain in lawful F-1 student status;
  • Assist in maintaining website information for stakeholders.
  • Advise F-1 on requirements to maintain status.
  • Provide guidance on and interpretation of federal nonimmigrant regulations; assist with campus stakeholder awareness of procedures and guidelines, rules and regulations related to F-1 students.
  • Initiate I-94 (Entry/Exit record) corrections and assistance with pending or lost documents.
  • Engage in troubleshooting and problem solving to ensure data accuracy.

3. Provide ongoing support for student success as it relates to intercultural learning and
programming;
  • Advise international students on personal, academic, financial, and cultural issues to support academic and personal success.
  • Assist with programming related to student success, including student Global Ambassador program, Denison’s Global Living Community, arrival and orientation of international students.
  • Conduct visa research for students studying abroad for a semester, short-term, and faculty-led study, and provide additional support as needed.
Perform other duties as required.

  • Demonstrated expertise in federal regulations and compliance related to international students an immigration services

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated expertise with SEVIS and SEVIS reporting; understanding and thorough knowledge of visa types and requirements; prior administrative or office experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills along with personal flexibility and collaborative style.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills. Basic mathematical skills.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply federal immigration regulation requirements to the practical experience of international students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations; teamwork experience; attention to detail; ability to balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, communicate professionally with students and University staff.
  • Work within a service office with a regular flow of student traffic, both domestic and international students.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and to be a self-starter.
  • Experience coordinating projects, analyzing data, and generating reports from multiple data sources.
  • Demonstrated experience with some or all of the following: SEVIS, Terra Dotta ISSS, Banner, SLATE, Qualtrics, and Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite.
  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residency at point of offer. Must have a current, valid driver’s license and must be insurable under Denison’s liability insurance policy.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in international education administration, student affairs, educational leadership, or related area of study.
  • Previous experience working with international college and university students. Experience in a liberal arts institution or other highly student-centered environment.
  • Fluency in a foreign language, preferably Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, or other Asian language relevant to Denison’s international student population.
