Research Support Specialist



Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Field and lab experience in marine science. Experience operating a small boat. Experience with organizing and analyzing large data sets. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Biology, Marine Biology, or a related field. Experience in water quality monitoring and related laboratory and field procedures, including analysis of chlorophyll and nutrient concentrations. Knowledge of phytoplankton and HABs, including species identification. Experience with clams and oysters, including measurements of size, condition index, and gonad index. Experience cultivating and monitoring the growth of seaweeds in the field. SCUBA and/or snorkeling research experience. Experience synthesizing large data sets into figures and reports.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Research Support Specialist, under the auspices of Principal Investigator Dr. Christopher Gobler, will be conducting extensive field work, including seaweed cultivation and monitoring, monitoring oyster growth and survivorship on restored reefs, monitoring clam condition index, collection of seaweed and shellfish samples from boats, collection of water samples, and installation of monitoring equipment and aquaculture systems. The incumbent will also be responsible for processing field samples and conducting a variety of laboratory analyses, and inputting and managing the associated data.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Field sampling (water, shellfish, seaweeds).
  • Laboratory processing of field samples.
  • Data input, organization, and management.
  • Data analysis and report writing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
