Description
This is the third level in the Information Technology Series. Incumbents are responsible for providing expert enterprise network and infrastructure planning, configuration, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and security. Determine future network and infrastructure system requirements; design and review internal and external network and infrastructure requirements to support the needs of the college.
Example of Duties
Provides expert technical support for systems that affect the entire College, such as, switches, routers, firewalls, LAN, WAN, MAN, WLAN, enterprise resource planning systems, student and employee account provisioning systems, and other operating systems; work may involve managing user accounts, processing access requests, providing security clearances, and performing related tasks to support College operations
Performs hardware and software maintenance on systems and system components to ensure operational efficiency, and data integrity and security; work may involve updating and installing patches for operating systems; upgrading software packages; and testing and evaluating system performance
Supports College and other department operations by identifying and troubleshooting technical problems related to networks, servers, desktops, operating systems, programs, and application software systems; writing and implementing scripts; providing helpdesk support; and managing backups and scheduling department jobs
Coordinates with internal departments and external agencies, including vendors, to facilitate IT operations, communicate and gather information, and ensure compliance with service agreements, contracts, laws, regulations, and other procedures and requirements
Prepares and maintains operational records, reports, forms, and related information
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Typical Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related area; and 3-5 years related experience.
- Certifications in CompTIA Net+, Security+, Linux+, Cisco CCNA or similar certifications;
KNOWLEDGE:
- Applicable hardware, software, and peripheral devices;
- Network design, maintenance, and implementation practices and procedures;
- Client/server environments;
- Network operating systems;
- Diagnostic tools and equipment;
- Operating system software and administration principles and practices;
- System configuration principles and practices;
- Computer back-up, file transfer, and restoration principles;
- System security principles.
SKILLS:
- Installing hardware, software, network, and peripheral equipment;
- Utilizing diagnostic analyzers and related equipment and tools;
- Researching and selecting required materials and equipment;
- Implementing system improvements;
- Developing and configuring technological platforms, networks, and systems;
- Communicating technical information to a non-technical audience;
- Monitoring and maintaining system security;
- Enterprise configuration management;
- Works independently and as part of a team; assists in large scale projects such as large system installations.
- Proficiency with open source technologies;
- Network management experience in an academic environment.
- Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information.
