The ideal candidate is an experienced HR professional who is passionate about the mission, vision and values of the San Diego Rescue Mission. The individual is an inspiring leader who can set vision for the department and define achievable annual goals focused on excellence in the five pillars of Human Resources: Recruitment and Retention, Performance Management, Compensation and Benefits, Engagement & Culture and Training & Resources. To lead the department well, the individual will encourage, grow and develop team members to increase the capacity of the department. Organization skills, the ability to prioritize and a high level of computer and software literacy is essential for success in this role. The job also requires travel during the work day on occasion to our other sites that are within 1 hour of the main downtown location.

Recruitment and Retention

  • Directs and maintains an effective recruitment program that encompasses a variety of sources and is designed to meet the Mission’s unique employment needs.
  • Recruits and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Continually improves the onboarding process for new staff collaborating across functions with IT, Facilities, and the hiring department including metrics for evaluating the new employee’s experience during the first 90 days.
  • Conducts annual market-based compensation study to ensure competitiveness.

Performance Management

  • With the VP of HR, designs and continually improves the annual development planning process.
  • Works cross-functionally to train on coaching, development, and performance improvement plans.
  • Acts as mediator in employee situations as needed to help resolve conflicts.
  • Continually improve exit process for departing staff.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Oversees payroll processing and ensures accuracy.
  • Reviews and researches benefit materials and practices on an annual basis and recommends changes for improvement.
  • Develops and maintains a human resources system that meets top management information needs
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.

Engagement and Culture

  • Responsible for planning and organizing all Staff events promoting organizational culture.
  • Responsible for employee updates and communication, establishing creative and effective ways to communicate with staff.
  • Conducts semi-annual employee engagement surveys.

Training and Resources

  • Ensures compliance with all legally mandated employee trainings.
  • Prepares and delivers monthly training for all supervisors regarding human resources policies and best practices.
  • Mentors supervisors in the area of coaching and performance management.
  • Updates the Mission’s Employee Handbook and job descriptions annually.
  • Prepares and delivers both formal and informal managerial reports and/or presentations to the Leadership team, various managerial staff and/or groups, “All Staff” and/or any external audiences.
  • Consults legal counsel to ensure that human resources policies comply with federal and state law; coordinates annual training programs designed to inform staff of legal issues in the workplace.

Education and Experience
:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, Organizational Psychology or related field required
  • 5+ years of experience in the field of Human Resources required
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience required
  • Experience working at a nonprofit organization preferred

  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.

Special License/Certification: PHR, SPHR, or SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP, a plus.

Travel/Transportation: The employee must be able to travel as the job requires to our locations in Oceanside and National City however the main location for the position is downtown San Diego. The employee must have reliable transportation If the employee receives authorization to use a Mission vehicle to perform duties, he or she must present a current California driver’s license and good driving record in order to be placed on the Mission’s insurance policy.
