Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor or other assigned administrator, operate a student transporter van over designated routes in accordance with schedules, picking up and discharging students.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The following list of duties describes the various types of work that may be performed and the level of technical complexity of the assignment(s), and is not intended to be an all-inclusive list.

  • Transport passengers safely
  • Perform pre/post trip vehicle inspection
  • Assist students in the loading and unloading process
  • Provide safe and reliable transportation service by operating position specific vehicles, which may include multi passenger vans
  • Report vehicle maintenance problems
  • Assist passengers in evacuation of the vehicle in case of emergency
  • Report any accident or incident according to HUSD policy
  • Manage students/passengers
  • Follow all policies and procedures in accordance with HUSD
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness
  • Follow HUSD fueling procedures
  • Document and submit daily paperwork; including but not limited to time cards, vehicle repair requests, incident reports
  • Clean and prepare vehicles for inclement weather conditions, including scraping or cleaning windows
  • Utilize vehicle equipment, including wheelchair lifts, radios and emergency equipment safely and efficiently

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Safe driving practices
  • Provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Basic record-keeping techniques
  • Oral and written communication skills

ABILITY TO:

  • Operate a school passenger van over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students
  • Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school passenger van
  • Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition
  • Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action
  • Learn designated routes including stops and traffic hazards
  • Maintain routine records
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Meet schedules and timelines
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices
  • Assist in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary
Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or GED and three years driving with a valid license.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Class C driver's license with passenger endorsement and a safe driving record
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certificates
  • Incumbent will be involved in field work which requires travel in personal or District vehicles to various sites

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed indoors, outdoors and in a vehicle and confined space
  • Constant noise
  • Varying temperature conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Seeing to monitor students and perform assigned transportation activities
  • Lifting to assist children on and off the bus
  • Sitting for extended periods of time when operating a transportation vehicle
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to clean vehicles

HAZARDS:

  • Various traffic hazards including stopping traffic and escorting students across streets
  • Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions
  • Exposure to fumes, gasses, grease, and oil
  • Work is performed with moving parts

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Incumbents in this classification must possess required certification(s) within specialized field.

Positions in this job classification typically work 30 hours/week for 10 months/year.

The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Hayward Unified School District does not pay for employee health and welfare benefits.

Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. Health benefit costs are 100% employee paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Employees may opt out of health coverage upon presentation of proof of alternate coverage.

Dental coverage is mandatory for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more, regardless of outside coverage. Less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The District contributes the full premium for "employee only". Any additional premium will be employee paid.
