San Francisco Public Works (SFPW) currently has vacancies for the position of Truck Driver (7355) to join our Operations Division.

Street Environmental Services
Keeps the City’s streets, sidewalks and other public spaces clean with mechanical and manual sweeping, graffiti abatement and power washing. The 24/7 operation runs specialized operations, including the Hot Spots teams that focus on encampment cleanups, CleanCorridorsSF, which provides a weekly deep cleaning to neighborhood commercial corridors, and proactive illegal dumping runs in the most impacted areas. The team also supports volunteer programs to advance San Francisco’s cleaning and greening initiatives.

Appointment Type: TEMPORARY AS-NEEDED. This position is for as-needed (on-call assignments) for up to a maximum of 1040 hours. This position is excluded by the charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. In order to be considered for a permanent appointment, incumbent will be required to successfully compete in a Civil Service Examination.

Job Description


MAJOR, IMPORTANT, AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under general supervision, drives and operates various types of motor vehicles and other automotive equipment in connection with construction and maintenance operations.

  • Drives and operates trucks in pulling trailers, as well as pulling and operating compressors and pumps which involves using safety chains and the operation of power lift gates.
  • Drives and operates sweepers as well as maintaining brooms and makes sure the unit is lubricated daily.
  • Drives dump trucks with power take-up units which are used to haul brush, garbage, sand and dispense materials at dump site.
  • Operates multiple-unit tractor mowers and drives equipment in connection with the maintenance of grounds and athletic fields.
  • Operates street flushing and mounted air compressor equipment which involves loading water, operating auxiliary pumps, and adjusting sprayers.
  • Loads and unloads heavy equipment (such as various types of earth-moving equipment) and construction materials such as aggregates and waste.
  • Insures that loads are properly and safely secured.
  • Cleans and does light maintenance on vehicles and equipment by checking oil, tires, and fluid levels, and changing fuses.
  • Operates two-way radio for information and safety.
  • Prepares in writing a variety of reports such as daily reports which list driving activity, accident reports, maintenance reports, and monthly summaries and may perform office tasks including making routine purchases of materials and supplies.
  • Performs required DOT (Department of Transportation) and CHP (California Highway Patrol) inspections and completes appropriate forms.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Experience:

  • Two years of verified experience as a truck driver using heavy construction equipment or other trucks over 26,000 pounds, such as winch trucks, semi-trailers, sweepers, multiple-unit tractor mowers, dump trucks, or other construction vehicles with power take-off units and/or lift gates.
  • A good driving record. An applicant will be considered a negligent driver (and therefore not qualified) if his/her driving record shows six or more violation points in the last twelve months, or eight or more violation points in the last twenty-four months, or ten or more violation points in the last thirty-six months.

License: Possession of a valid Class B or Class A driver license with current Medical Certificate. License must have no restriction on driving vehicles with air brakes.
