Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Temp Research Assistant- Part Time (Research Study Actor) in Medical Oncology/Behavioral Science at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The position is a part-time, temporary, per diem position. The grant project focuses on skin cancer prevention, specifically tanning facility compliance with laws restricting minors of certain ages from tanning, which differs by state. This employee will conduct phone calls as a pseudo-patron (confederate) with tanning facilities so we can better understand compliance with state tanning laws and restrictions. They will also assist with tracking calls and other research-related tasks as necessary. The employee will work closely as needed with the Research Manager and Program Coordinator, and the Principal Investigator as needed. This is a grant-funded position.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Making phone calls to tanning salons as a pseudo-patron (confederate) so we can better understand compliance with state tanning laws and restrictions.
  • Following study protocol, IRB regulations, and procedures guides for calls carefully in order to maintain study compliance.
  • Tracking of phone calls and study interactions for accurate data collection and study reporting while maintaining records.
  • Preparation for and participating in phone, electronic, and in-person communications and meetings with research staff and Principal Investigator to report study progress and concerns.
  • Reporting concerns or issues with calls to study staff and the Principal Investigator quickly and on an ongoing basis.
  • Acts as a role model for professional integrity, customer service and improved quality.

  • Acting or sales experience or skills or currently enrolled in an acting or theater program.


Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to convincingly sound like they are a female adolescent (e.g., 14-17 years old). Callers must be professional and able to maintain the pseudo-patron character of a teenager making a tanning facility appointment.
  • Must demonstrate efficient organizational, communication (oral and written), and problem-solving skills required. Strong attention to detail, flexibility, and ability to work independently. Must be meticulous in tracking and reporting of phone call interactions.
  • Must demonstrate effective oral and communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Some experience or exposure to academic or clinical research study settings.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Talking, typing, and hearing. No special vision requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Business office environment. Moderate noise.

Special Conditions
  • Must be available to make calls when adolescents are typically out of school and tanning facilities are open. Weekend and evenings may be required to reach facilities in other time zones. Weekly hours are negotiable/flexible (e.g., 4-16 hours per week for up to one year).
