About us:

Synata Bio is a technology leader in alternative fuels and chemicals. Our low-cost, biologically-based process converts a wide variety of abundant carbon-containing feedstocks, such as natural gas, coal, wood, garbage, and industrial waste gases into valuable fuels and chemicals. We have combined industry-standard gas-production and product-recovery technologies with our novel and proprietary molecular biology platform to create a unique, stable, low-cost synthesis gas fermentation technology platform. Position Summary:

The Chemical Process Engineer will report to the Director of Process Engineering. The primary responsibility will be implementing engineering tools and methods for evaluation of plant designs and economics. The candidate will also support Process and Project Engineering for the design and construction of Synata Bio’s commercial biochemical plants.

Location:

Warrenville, IL.

Travel:

Travel of 15% is expected; this position supports local and international teams.

Position Responsibilities:

· Process design engineering for commercial-scale Synata Bio plants.

· Developing and configuring process models in Aspen Plus or HYSYS to evaluate process and economic impacts for various projects and specific process alternatives for a given project.

· Prepare Process Flow Diagrams, P&I Diagrams, Heat & Material Balance, estimated plant hydraulics, utility summaries and project/equipment specifications for commercial projects .

· For projects where the bulk of the engineering work is outsourced to an EPC company, the candidate will actively participate in the review and approval of project deliverables.

· Support existing and incubating projects by developing operating and capital cost estimates.

· Provide engineering support for commissioning, start-up and troubleshooting of operating plants.

· Participate in design and operation reviews to ensure we incorporate world-class safety, meet all environmental standards, and maximize plant operability.

· Work with the R&D group to translate laboratory concepts and results into engineering designs.

· Assist R&D in developing experimental programs to validate specifics of the plant design basis.

Qualifications:

· B.S. in Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.

· 5+ years of experience in process engineering, working directly in the design and construction of commercial-scale plants.

· Experience with Aspen Plus, HYSYS, Aspen Capital Cost Estimator, dynamic simulation, and economic analysis.

· Experience with fermentation or biological process design and operation is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of sterility concerns associated with a biological processes and experience in process design to minimize biological contamination.

· Experience in the scale-up of new process technologies from the lab to commercial scale will be valuable.

· Experience in field commissioning, start-up, and operations.

· Experience with process design and project engineering.

· Experience using AutoCAD or similar drawing software for development of PFDs and P&IDs is highly desirable.

· Fundamental understanding of process equipment and sizing methods, as well as process control instrumentation.

· The qualified candidate will be a critical thinker with a natural tendency to discern important deliverables and tasks within an assignment.

· The successful candidate will be detail oriented – creation and checking of heat and mass balances, P&IDs, and equipment specifications requires a detail oriented individual.

· Ability to successfully manage workload and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

· Ability to function in a dynamic environment; Synata’s engineering team is lean (but growing) and requires flexibility.
