Duties

As a Nuclear Engineer (Senior Naval Reactors Representative), you will:

  • Be responsible to the Director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP), for the overall planning, direction, coordination, and implementation of joint Department of Energy and Department of Navy technical programs at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and U.S. Navy activities in the Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Apra Harbor, Guam, areas.
  • Surveillance and technical direction for overhaul, repair, modification, testing and operation of Naval nuclear propulsion plants and related facilities.
  • Monitor and perform surveillance of operation, repair, and maintenance of nuclear propulsion plants in Navy ships operating in the area.
  • Advise the Director, NNPP and top management on problems affecting naval nuclear propulsion plant operation and maintenance and make recommendations to resolve these problems and effect improvements.
  • Evaluate requirements for naval nuclear propulsion plant work at the shipyard including engineering, quality control, radiological control, trade, and support personnel.
  • Provide guidance and technical direction to DOE Reactor Plant prime contractor resident technical experts assigned at the shipyard.
  • Supervise the staff of the immediate office.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-15 or equivalent) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

  • Extensive experience and knowledge of nuclear engineering, to include: the application of nuclear propulsion to the repair, maintenance, modernization, testing, and operation of nuclear reactor plants; knowledge and experience of nuclear safety regulations, practices, and procedures; and extensive knowledge and experience of shipyard practices, including reactor plant testing and reactor plant operating procedures in order to provide expert advisory services.

Education

There is no substitution for education at the EN-5 level.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGINEER:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Engineering OR
  • Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate professional field, provided you have had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. OR
  • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum. OR
  • Current registration as a Professional Engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico allows eligibility only if your registration is within or closely related to nuclear engineering.
