Seeking Part-Time Support Teacher for Seeds of Wonder, a nature-based Montessori early childhood program in Kittery, Maine. This temporary position starts immediately and has the possibility of continuing through the summer. The hours are 1 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

In September 2022, White Pine Programs and Brixham Montessori Friends School partnered to expand its high quality and affordable early childhood education to families living in Kittery and/or families working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery by working with the Town of Kittery to develop a high-fidelity nature-based Montessori program for children ages 2-6 years old.

Brixham’s mission to honor each child’s individuality, creativity and intellectual potential through an enriched Montessori educational program aligns well with White Pine’s mission to forge personal resilience, nurture community and promote lifelong caretaking of the natural world through environmental experiences.

Job Description

Education and Training:

  • A degree in environmental education/outdoor education, education or family studies, preferred.
  • Experience working in a childcare or school setting.
  • Experience with or willingness to be trained in: Positive Discipline, Maine Early Learning and Development Standards (MELDS), and Health and Safety.
  • If not already part of the Montessori community, a willingness to be trained in Montessori practices.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience or strong background in nature education, the arts and sciences, or related fields.
  • Teaching groups of children in traditional and non-traditional settings.
  • Training and experience with special needs and at-risk children, helpful but not required.

Physical Ability/General Requirements:

  • Capable of walking on uneven, hilly ground, through snow and cold and rainy weather.
  • Capable of carrying 50 lbs outdoors.
  • Minimum age of 21 years old.
  • Willing to have a background check upon hire as well as during any time as an employee.

Role Expectations

  • Work with administrators and assist lead teachers in preschool or primary classrooms as needed.
  • Ensure that programs are delivered at a high level, with a focus on developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Lead nature-based activities both indoors and out across all four seasons and in all weather conditions.
  • Be a dynamic team member working in a collaborative education setting.
  • Model professional, ethical and safe behavior for staff, volunteers, and program participants.
  • When requested, maintain program properties and materials including infrastructure, gear, program materials, and bathroom facilities.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings throughout the program year.

Administrative & Preparatory Work

  • Communicate with families consistently throughout the program year.
  • Contribute to program curriculum and student evaluations.
  • Complete administrative tasks as required by school leadership that relate to your role.
  • Participate in administrative meetings as they relate to your role.

Safety

  • Follow and ensure adherence to safety and risk assessment procedures by other staff, volunteers, and students.
