Position Title: Senior Tribal Climate Resilience Liaison

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) is the collective spirit and unifying voice of our nation's Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). AIHEC provides leadership and influences public policy on American Indian and Alaska Native higher education issues through advocacy, research, and programmatic initiatives; promotes and strengthens
Indigenous languages, cultures, communities, lands, and tribal nations; and through its unique position, serves member institutions and emerging TCUs.

The Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC) is a collaborative partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and a consortium of universities across the
Southwest U.S. Based in Tucson at the University of Arizona (UArizona), the mission of the SW
CASC is to develop actionable science and implementable climate adaptation solutions in partnership with natural and cultural resource managers, policy makers, Native Nations, and researchers across the Southwest.

Summary
The Senior Tribal Climate Resilience Liaison is a full-time position that provides direct support to
Tribal Nations, TCUs and Tribal communities, on behalf of SW CASC and AIHEC. This position is located on the UArizona campus in Tucson and reports to the AIHEC Project Director, the SW
CASC’s Assistant Director (UArizona) and the Federal Director (USGS). The position will draw upon the SW CASC Tribal Engagement Strategy and work with the SW CASC and AIHEC to implement a communications, education and outreach program involving climate resilience planning and implementation. This includes facilitation of focus groups, meetings, workshops, and other convenings. Applicants must be willing to travel ~30%, sometimes on weekends.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Existing relationships and networks with Tribal professionals highly desired, particularly among southwestern Tribal Nations and communities;
  • Assemble and lead a Southwest Adaptation Forum (SWAF) Advisory Committee consisting of Tribal representatives;
  • Facilitate relationship building, building on existing and cultivating new Tribal partnerships;
  • Facilitate connections between Tribal Nations, TCUs and Tribal communities and SW

CASC, AIHEC and other regional federal programs (e.g., Regional Integrated Science
Assessment (RISA) programs, USDA Climate Hubs, and university-based Tribal extension programs, etc.) needed to supplement community climate adaptation planning, research and adaptive response efforts to further build and strengthen networks of Tribal adaptation practitioners;

  • Conduct outreach to Tribal Nations, TCUs and Tribal communities within the SW CASC service area to inform them of the climate change science and adaptation resources;
  • Assist Tribal Nations, TCUs and Tribal communities in identifying local climate research needs and interpretation of locally relevant research findings, including helping SW

CASC initiatives and projects between Tribes and partners;

  • Establish and maintain ongoing contact with Tribal resource managers, TCU faculty, and other Tribal personnel involved in climate response planning and risk management;

  • Participate in a BIA-led network of Tribal Climate Resilience Liaisons working within the

CASC system;

  • Provide technical support to Tribal nations, TCUs and Tribal communities in design and implementation of climate research projects, in coordination with SW CASC research personnel;
  • Work closely with the Junior Tribal Resilience Liaison, providing leadership and strategic planning in workplan development; and
  • Other tasks as deemed necessary.

Required Education, Experience, and Attributes (minimum requirements):

  • Bachelor’s degree in botany, biology, wildlife, horticulture, ecology or a related field of study relevant to climate adaptation science with three years of post-degree experience; or a Master’s degree (preferred) in a related discipline with two years of post-degree experience;
  • Basic understanding of Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge systems and sovereignty issues, particularly among southwestern Tribal Nations and communities;
  • Three plus years of experience in climate change and/or tribal issues, including the social sciences and public health;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, especially the ability to articulate relevant climate change-related issues and concepts to American Indian communities and non- scientists generally;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member;
  • Knowledge of consensus building and group facilitation processes; and
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, document, and manage multiple projects.

This position reports to the AIHEC Project Director, the SW CASC’s Assistant Director
(UArizona) and the Federal Director (USGS).

Travel: 30% or as needed
