Job Summary/Basic Function:
Job GoalThe Everett Community College Information Technology (IT) Department is seeking a journey level Database Administrator / SQL Developer, defined as having the ability to manage, build and optimize database servers including the ability to develop, test, audit and deploy queries and procedures in our application and database stack, with some supervisor input, to support campus-wide, mission critical, high impact web applications and database driven integrations. As a member of the Web Development & Data Services team, this position is responsible for the design and administration of the EvCC public and internal databases, database jobs, data replication and integration to third party platforms. This position also assists with deployment and optimization of our queries, stored procedures, SSIS packages, and web application development.
About Information Technology at EvCCThe EvCC Information Technology (IT) Department develops, manages and maintains the organization's technology-related assets (hardware, software, systems, etc.), policies, procedures and systems. This includes the administration of email systems, network setup, data backup and retrieval and document storage, website support & security and application development.
The IT Department also provides employees and students with day-to-day technology support to ensure that technology-related problems do not interfere with their work and/or education.
Job Responsibilities
  • Installs, configures, upgrades, backs up and maintains development and production database servers.
  • Protects databases against threats or unauthorized access.
  • Ensures databases are adequately backed up and able to be recovered in the event of memory loss.
  • Administers enterprise databases to include schema development, performance tuning, encryption, replication and integration between internal and third party applications.
  • Sets up monitoring tools for the SQL and MariaDB database servers, review system logs and messages, investigates performance problems and makes recommendations for system enhancements.
  • Analyzes, reviews and mitigates database system problems and performance, ensuring the integrity, consistency and availability of all web services.
  • Suggests changes and improvements for database maintenance or protection.
  • Designs databases with both front-end and back-end users in mind.
  • Designs, tests and implements data retrieval methods (including exports, proprietary reports, and database views).
  • Produces queries, stored procedures, data scheduled tasks, reviews optimization and supports database development.
  • Gathers user requirements from stakeholders or subject matter experts, translating business needs into functional specifications, sets project deliverables and timeline, and manages project scope.
  • Develops and writes documentation related to the structure and maintenance of database systems. This also includes creating reports to be used for strategic planning and training materials utilized by peers and lower-level staff.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in database administration and query development on a scrum delivery team, collaborating with campus stakeholders, designers, and other IT staff to deliver business value on an iterative basis.
  • Own support tickets as assigned. Take responsibility for investigating and clarifying the issue and communicating the status of this work up to and including resolution.
  • Actively engages in the technology industry networks and understands how evolving technologies can benefit our organization.
  • Communicates occurrence of outages or application errors and resulting actions taken to resolve or escalate problems.
  • Coaches and influences team members on best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Works effectively with all levels of staff within and outside of IT and outside the organization.
  • Performs other web duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of industry experience in database administration, database architecture, and/or in education towards a Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent related degree. Industry certification is desirable.
  • Analytical mindset and good problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong command of SQL and SQL server tools.
  • One or more years of experience with database technologies (MySQL, MariaDB, MS SQL) and query development, design and optimization.
  • Knowledge of Internet standards relative to database technology development, security and optimization.
  • Knowledge of Linux and Windows command line interface (CLI).
  • Experience working in a source control environment, to maintain organization and logging of codebase changes.
  • Commitment to or demonstrated experience providing an equitable, safe and inclusive environment for all students, employees and patrons.
  • Professional and courteous with strong verbal and written communication skills in order to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience working independently on complex tasks, both design and implementation.



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong mathematical and statistical knowledge.
  • Advanced knowledge of database security, encryption, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards
  • Experience with web application development
  • Experience with PeopleSoft ERP
  • Experience in administration of SQL Server 2016, 2017, or 2019
  • Experience in administration of MySQL / MariaDB database server
  • Experience with cloud services (AWS, Microsoft Azure) a plus
  • Familiarity with SSIS, SSRS

Work Hours: Regular business hours will be Monday through Friday and Summer schedule is Monday through Thursday. Occasional Telecommuting available. May be required to work an alternate work schedule based on project needs.
