By joining our District 4, Hardin County Unit in Hardin County as a Highway Technician I, you’ll have the opportunity to perform intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations.

Holders of this Highway Technician I will complete tasks such as:
  • Operates single axle and tandem truck to haul maintenance materials to and from job sites, apply salt and plow snow. Operates front end loader to load trucks with maintenance materials and salt.
  • Operates intermediate equipment such as asphalt distributors, hot boxes, and recyclers, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro-seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers, slope mowers, tandem dump trucks, and tow pavers to perform duties such as grading of ditches, rolling of hot mix, application of chemicals, and installation of drainage structures.
  • Learns to operate advanced equipment such as, but not limited to, boom saws, bulldozers, cranes, excavators, graders, lowboys, milling machines, self-propelled pavers, semi-truck/trailers to perform duties such as advanced carpentry work, concrete finishing, installation of complex signs, milling and patching pavement, and the grading of slopes.
  • Responds to snow and ice events and other emergency events along state roadways.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Snow and ice removal techniques, materials, environmental issues, material storage, equipment maintenance and theory behind.
  • How to maintain vegetation along roadsides in a safe and efficient manner.
  • How to properly set up signs and devices to control traffic through work zones.
Additional position information (travel required, standing/stooping/bending/lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.)
  • Construction or highway maintenance experience.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of construction or highway maintenance experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 2 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
