This casual position falls under our Operations Programs Directorate in support of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center’s Landsat Next project as the primary customer for this role. This position will provide engineering expertise for assessment of mission operations center technical performance and architecture solutions geared towards native, constellation-based flight operations, along with formulation and development strategy definition.
On average, this position in envisioned to require 5-10 hours per week with some irregularity in hours pending on-going technical activities. This is primarily a tele-commuting position with expectations to occasionally travel to be onsite at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.
What You’ll be Doing
Support the existing Aerospace Landsat Next project team to perform the following:
  • Assess existing and alternative mission operations center architecture for future Landsat Next constellation operations.
  • Identify improvements for multi-satellite systems operations, including opportunities for greater degrees of efficiencies and levels of automation.
  • Recommend architecture strategies or technology infusion that promote long-term sustainability and cost efficiency of operations.
  • Provide technical analyses and formulate integrated technical recommendations for mission systems special studies as assigned.
  • Support formulation and acquisition strategy development.
  • Present status, results, and positions to technical engineering change boards and customer boards.
  • Attends team technical, decisional and milestone reviews as expertise is warranted.
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable STEM areas or another applicable field.
  • 12 or more years of increasingly responsible professional engineering and flight operations readiness, mission management, and flight systems architectures.
  • Willing to travel domestically. Approximately 2-3 trips annually.
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • 10+ years of proven experience within USGS or NASA flight systems readiness or mission management activities.
  • Experience with Landsat mission activities.

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
