Scope of Position:

Camp Inclusion Specialist is an administrative and support position to the Camp and Early Childhood Supervisor. The Camp Inclusion Specialist must have proven ability and desire to work with children, parents, volunteers, and peers. The Camp Inclusion Specialist oversees Day Camp program areas, leads activities for Day Camp events as needed, and ensures the safety and well-being of all campers while they are in their care. This position is expected to lead by example, create a welcoming environment for all, facilitate coaching and training of staff, & facilitate relationship building amongst staff, parents, and children.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment. The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Able to work with limited supervision and work in a team setting with other professionals. Exercise good judgment and comfortable taking initiative with projects.

Must have genuine love and concern for young people and their overall wellbeing. Professional attitude and approach to problem solving. Excellent oral and written communications skills with ability to maintain a self-motivated schedule. Able to address multiple tasks in a timely manner. Responsive, detail oriented, ability to take projects from beginning through completion.

Proficient with current Microsoft software computer programs including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet, and standard office equipment and systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Know, explain, and exemplify mission, purpose, and values of the Kroc Center and the Salvation Army.
  • Delegate, coach, & instruct Day Camp staff to lead Day Camp and other recreation activities with enthusiasm according to training protocol.
  • Adhere to and implement discipline procedures created for campers and staff.
  • Complete “Report to Parents” forms to inform parents, staff, and Camp Supervisor of issues, such as camper injuries, disputes, and behavioral problems.
  • Coordinate any camper, parent, staff, or volunteer issues with Camp Supervisor in timely manner; follow up with appropriate documentation as directed.
  • Maintain accurate group schedule for each camper group, including Day Camp Counselors that assigned to each specific group; ensure accurate group headcount of registered campers at all times.
  • Oversee and facilitate Day Camp sign-in/sign-out procedures according to protocol; check ID of each person signing out a camper and ensure all participant documents are properly distributed to parents and/ or other authorized individuals.
  • Communicate respectfully and with a positive tone with peers, employees, supervisors, and customers of various socio-economic backgrounds; handle disputes with participants, parents and staff in a professional manner with guidance from the Camp Supervisor, and act as a first point-of-contact in handling customer-service issues.
  • Enforce facility- and activity-specific regulations to ensure safety; ensure that only registered campers participate.
  • Maintain safe working environment; report all facility defects/problems and any suspicious activities or persons to the FAE Coordinator.
  • Assist in emergencies and treatment of injured participants, volunteers, and/or staff; follow up by completing appropriate paperwork as directed.
  • Assist Camp Supervisor with planning and instruction for annual Day Camp Staff Training.
  • Develop, monitor, and ensure implementation of participant behavior contracts as needed; ensure appropriate communication and completion of all documentation.
  • Maintain and distribute participants’ personal medications; maintain medication logbook according to established procedures.
  • Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and the Day Camp Code of Conduct.
  • Perform all other duties as directed.

Physical Requirements:

The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25-50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

This position may on occasion, work weekends and evenings. Most work is performed onsite. Some work may be performed offsite. Manages multiple simultaneous projects with competing priorities and varying deadlines with frequent interruptions. Works with minimal supervision and may be required to make independent decisions that may involve unique or complex issues regarding demanding requests or timelines.

Education and Work Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years working with children; camp counselor experience preferred.
  • Preferred classwork in childhood development or related field.
  • Must have a positive attitude toward helping and fostering children in their development.

License and Certifications:

First Aid/CPR Certification or ability to obtain it within 30 days of employment.

Food Handler’s card or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
