Stanford University is seeking a Director, Ecopreneurship Programs to lead a new program to enhance and enrich sustainability entrepreneurship education across the university. The Director will work with faculty leadership in both the Graduate School of Business and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, to create new and bolster existing cross-disciplinary sustainability entrepreneurship education across the university. The Director will work collaboratively with faculty and will build and lead a team to support development of sustainability-focused entrepreneurship curriculum, and to create, launch, manage, and implement a portfolio of co-curricular programs empowering students to become impactful entrepreneurial leaders who will build a more sustainable future.


The Director will be based in the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies in the Graduate School of Business, partnering with two Faculty Directors – one from the GSB and one from the Doerr School of Sustainability. This role requires extensive collaboration with colleagues and across the university. This position is campus-based with limited hybrid flexibility.


Your primary responsibilities include:

The Director of Ecopreneurship Programs will build and develop a diverse, high-performing, team of 3-4 staff to:

  • Develop a shared vision with Faculty Directors for bolstering sustainability entrepreneurship education at Stanford, building on the unique strengths of various programs across the University, and feedback from sustainability-focused entrepreneurial students.
  • Create and monitor a set of student educational pathways that encourage students to learn about the multiple sustainability and climate challenges facing the world, and to prepare students to pursue sustainability-focused entrepreneurship and problem solving.
  • Support faculty creation of new (and scaling of existing) curriculum and courses designed to introduce students to topics of sustainability-focused entrepreneurship, including experiential courses wherein students learn entrepreneurship by actively evaluating potential sustainability-focused venture ideas of their own creation.
  • Create and operate summer immersion programs to provide hands-on experiential learning in sustainability entrepreneurship beyond the classroom
  • Provide strong advising and coaching capacity to support students piloting sustainability-focused technology innovations.
  • Work with faculty to create new methods to take sustainability innovations to market.
  • Launch and operate post-graduation fellowship grants enabling students to continue evaluating their sustainability-focused venture ideas upon graduation
  • Represent the vision of Ecopreneurship Programs to all constituents, including the dean’s office, leadership from partnering centers across the university, faculty, staff, students, external program contributors, and alumni.
  • Develop and manage program budget and allocate resources to best meet program goals. Provide long-range financial planning.
  • Develop and cultivate a network of partners and program contributors at Stanford and beyond

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience.
  • Strong, demonstrated, leadership experience. Demonstrated success building, leading, and developing a team that meets their goals and successfully delivers complex programs or products. Proven success in cultivating an effective team culture.
  • Awareness of, and interest in, the multitude of domestic and global environmental sustainability issues and an ability to quickly get up to speed on any specific issue
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, with proven experience in creating new programming, structures, and processes from the ground up.
  • An understanding of, and empathy for, the challenges faced by entrepreneurs, either through direct experience or through supporting and working with entrepreneurs.
  • A combination of strategic thinking and appreciation for the rigors and detail-oriented nature of operationalizing strategic visions within a complex academic institution.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills to effectively educate, inform, and inspire internal and external audiences.
  • Comfort with technology and data management. Strong analytical skills to review and assess complex data.
  • Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.
  • The ability to thrive in a highly dynamic, fast-paced role, within a large organization.
  • Demonstrated maturity, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • The humility necessary to empower others, both faculty and students, and find meaning in nurturing and supporting emerging leaders and rising academic talent.
