Job description

Apprentice Passenger car repairers inspect, repair, rebuild and service railroad passenger cars. This is accomplished through the use of hand tools, power tools, cutting torches and welding equipment.

Accountabilities

  • Conduct inspections of rolling stock (Passenger cars and high speed support equipment, etc.). Inspect rolling stock for defects or evidence of wear; inspect rolling stock for compliance with rules; inspect rolling stock damaged in derailments or collisions; conduct pre-trip inspections (air brake tests, fuel, etc.)
  • Perform scheduled and on-demand maintenance. Perform initial terminal air brake tests and other pre-trip maintenance; lubricate journals; clean and prepare surfaces for painting
  • Remove and replace defective appliances and components. Remove and replace defective components on rolling stock (trucks, shoes, coupler and cushioning assemblies, Windows, furniture, Cabinetry and air brake systems)
  • Work with shop machines and tools. Safely and effectively operate the following; acetylene torches, non-power tools (pliers, wrenches, hammers), power tools (drills, power saws, grinders); electric and gas welding equipment for use on metal of all type including stainless steel, aluminum and mild steel
  • Practice safe work habits. Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures, wear prescribed safety apparel; take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety of self or coworkers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting work
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

Qualifications

Required
  • Ability to speak English in a clear, concise manner to communicate with coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred
  • Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions
  • Experience carpentry
  • Experience welding
  • Experience operating tools required to repair passenger or freight cars

Physical Requirements

  • Able to occasionally climb and maintain balance when accessing cars, work vehicles, and moving on uneven surfaces
  • Able to occasionally bend, stoop, and kneel
  • Able to remain standing for more than one-half of every work day with an opportunity to periodically change position for comfort
  • Able to frequently walk to access shop and yard work areas
  • Able to occasionally push and pull objects weighing up to 93 lbs
  • Able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 85 lbs
  • Able to make frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects

Work Conditions

  • Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires

  • Willingness to work outside regardless of weather conditions
  • Must be available to work any shift
  • Able to provide your own transportation
  • Union Pacific operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This job may be required to work various shifts, overtime, holidays and weekends based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Willingness to practice safe work habits
  • To the extent required by federal law and/or collective bargaining agreement, membership to the respective labor union is required. The union agreement dictates the pay rate and cannot be individually negotiated. Monthly dues are the responsibility of the employee.
