Summary of the Job:

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Youth Program Director shall be responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of all Youth & Adult Sports Leagues, Youth Physical Education & Challenger programs. The Youth Program Director will be responsible for youth special events such as Healthy Kids Day and Halloween’s Boo-A-Rama. This position shall also serve as the Assistant Camp Director and support the Camp Director in the planning, development, and implementation of the YMCA’s Day Camp and Sports Camp programs.

Job Specifications:

The Youth Program Director should have a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Physical Education or demonstrated equivalent skills for the position. He/she must be able to work with volunteers, YMCA members, program participants, staff, contract labor providers, and committee members. The Director must have an understanding for the management of the facilities, equipment, programs and resources of the association. The incumbent must have experience and understanding in the development of lesson plans and curriculum. The Director is required to use analytical, interpretive, and evaluative thought in decision making and problem solving. This position requires excellent human relation skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people and to work in a non-structured and changing environment. Effective oral written skills are necessary as well as the ability to make independent decisions that adhere to the purpose, mission, and goals of the YMCA. Up to date certification in infant/child CPR, first aide, and YMCA Child Abuse Prevention are required.

Essential Functions:

1. Ensure that all youth physical education programs, youth & adult leagues, teen programs, Challenger programs, summer day and sports camps are of the highest quality and continue to meet the needs of the YMCA members, participants, and the community at large.

2. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff in program areas of responsibility. Ensure all staff has needed certifications and renewals within appropriate time frame, i.e. CPR, First Aide, AED, and Child Abuse Prevention.

3. Develop and control annual budget for programs which are in the scope of the Youth Program Director’s job responsibilities. Exercise necessary controls to assure operation of programs are carried out in a balanced fiscal operation result.

4. Recruit, train, supervise, and recognize program volunteers. Ensure program volunteers have attended training on YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and have had volunteer background check.

5. Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to youth programs which include but are not limited to youth physical education programs, youth & adult leagues, teen programs, Challenger programs, summer day and sports camps. Maintain proper staff to child ratio in summer day and sports camp programs as referenced by the WV Department of Health and Human Services and Tri-County YMCA policy.

6. Monitor fees due for program services to ensure payments received. Verify payments for programs with class rosters showing fees paid with registration forms and make sure any unpaid fees are collected. For day camp and sports camp programs in conjunction with the Family Services/Camp Director, ensure the collection of weekly fees due with coordination from the Finance Director. Intervene personally if any fees are more than two payments past due and work with parents to plan a suitable payment schedule for collection.

7. Evaluate the program needs of members and the community; measure the degree to which existing programs meet these needs; make appropriate recommendations and changes; initiate new programs in harmony with the association goals.

8. Keep accurate records essential for the control, evaluation, and reporting of programs to committees, the Board of Directors, and the Executive Director.

9. Schedule gymnasium usage in accordance with YMCA usage policy and in coordination with other YMCA Directors. Monitor and supervise gymnasium when in the facility.

10. Share in staff team responsibilities for the operation of the total YMCA program and facilities.

11. Work with Maintenance Director, Aquatic Director and Family Services/Camp Director to get Camp High-Tor in operating order for summer camp programs, including maintenance of the Camp grounds as needed.

12. Attend and participate in Program Committee meetings. Develop with the Program Chair, other Directors, and Executive Director agenda for meetings.

13. Coordinate activities for youth related special events such as Healthy Kids Day and the Halloween party. Participate in other YMCA special events such as the Annual Golf Tournament and 5K Race.

14. Plan and carry out public relation and marketing efforts to promote programs and membership.

15. Be an active participant of the Annual Scholarship Campaign.

16. Report maintenance conditions and problems in program areas of responsibility. Help implement solutions for problem areas.

17. Schedule all programs within job scope in conjunction and cooperation with other YMCA programs or programs conducted on YMCA property.

18. Become a certified trainer for YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and provide training for YMCA staff on a rotating schedule along with the Family Services Director.

19. Become a certified instructor for Red Cross CPR/AED First Aid and provide training for YMCA staff on a rotating schedule.

20. Participate as a member of the total staff team, contributing to the successful operations of the Tri-County YMCA and the YMCA of the USA and carry out all association policies. Project a positive image of the YMCA through positive relationships with members, program participants, parents, YMCA staff, and the community.

Other Responsibilities:

1. Continue professional career growth through reading, study, conference and meeting attendance, certifications classes and modules, including registering and maintaining an active status in the WV STARS program.

2. Perform additional responsibilities and duties upon the request of the Executive Director.

Effect on End Result:

1. The degree to which budget meets projections and success in fiscal management.

2. The level of participation and re-enrollment of participants and members in programs and membership and the extent to which the reputation of the YMCA in enhanced.

3. The development and maintenance of good staff and volunteer relations. Effective leadership that results in the smooth operations of all program areas. The degree to which staff under the Youth Program Director meet their performance standards.

4. The degree to which additional volunteers are recruited.

5. The degree to which program offerings expand to meet the needs of the community.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35,568.00 per year
