Job Description:
The Role: WIC Nutrition Educator
MaineGeneral Health is currently seeing WIC Nutrition Educator provides evidence-based nutrition/ health and breastfeeding education and counseling to WIC eligible clients; determine nutritional /medical risks and issue WIC food benefits. Nutrition Educators also assist in daily operations of office including client /staff issues, and vendor issues, as well as fostering community outreach through collaborations with community programs that impact WIC clients.
The Opportunity: MaineGeneral Health is offering an exciting 32 hour per week opportunity for a WIC Nutrition Educator to help to make a difference in the lives of our WIC clients.
The Work:
  • Follows WIC program policies and procedures for accuracy and detail in:
  • Explaining the WIC program,
  • Determining WIC eligibility
  • Obtaining, recording and interpreting anthropometrics and hematological data
  • Obtaining and reviewing relevant medical and dietary information
  • Determining nutrition and health risk
  • Assigning WIC priority status
  • Assigning appropriate WIC food prescription
  • Issuing WIC benefits
  • Uses sensitivity and ensures confidentially when assessing client information.
  • Insures all nutrition and health assessments are accurate, complete and properly documented.
  • Accurately interprets anthropometrics and hematological data.
  • Obtains, reviews and documents relevant medical information.
  • Determines and assigns nutrition and health risk for priority status according to WIC policies.
  • Determines nutrition needs and assigns appropriate WIC food prescription according to WIC guidelines.
  • Performs WIC Counseling and Client Education
  • Approaches WIC client's nutrition, health and breastfeeding concerns in a professional and caring manner.
  • Uses effective counseling, motivational interviewing and evidence-based information to encourage change, Identifies and addresses client barriers to successfully facilitate change.
  • Provides nutrition education to all WIC clients in accordance to State WIC guidelines while ensuring education is appropriate for nutritional status and risk criteria at the same time being sensitive to client's lifestyle, income level, and family and social considerations.
  • Ensures referral information is up to date and given to clients in a caring, assertive, and sensitive manner and is documented in client records.
  • Develops and documents goals and objectives with the client that accurately reflect the client’s nutrition and health status.
  • Identifies high-risk clients and initiates consultation or follow-up with WIC Registered Dietitian according to WIC guidelines.
  • Develops and provides group education programs for WIC clients, as well as bulletin board displays,
  • Newsletters and approved handouts.
  • Ensures that group topics, newsletters and handouts reflect the interests and needs of the WIC client population and are presented clearly and sensitively, with an emphasis on appropriate literacy level.
  • Ensures WIC clinics are inviting, comfortable, and safe for WIC clients as well as promotes healthy living through handouts, educational videos and bulletin.
  • Organizes and conducts WIC outreach clinics to populations of WIC-eligible clients outside of main site service area as determined by State WIC Agency policy.
  • Ensures the outreach clinics have comparable opportunities for WIC services as provided at main sites.
  • Works with community partners to ensure that WIC outreach clinics are inviting, comfortable, and safe for WIC clients.
  • Connects with community services and WIC vendors to increase awareness of WIC services in their area and address issues and concerns.
  • Engages in outreach efforts to maintain client participation numbers to ensure clinic viability.
  • Attends all mandatory WIC trainings required by State WIC Agency.
  • Documents all trainings pertaining to State WIC policies.
  • Meets State WIC Agency required annual continuing education requirements of nutrition and breastfeeding education.
  • Promotes WIC through community outreach, special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Accepts supervision and guidance and actively participates in efforts to improve quality of performance.

  • Associates or Bachelors in Dietetics or related field
  • Valid State of Maine Driver's License with clean driving record required.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
