VETERAN SERVICES SPECIALIST

Full Time / Exempt

Soldier’s Best Friend (SBF) is an Arizona-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Peoria. We are in search of a Veteran Services Specialist to join our mission driven team. This position will work directly with program participants to deliver quality programming to U.S. military combat-veterans living with Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and/or Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) in Arizona, while also providing loving homes and meaningful missions to Arizona homeless dogs. This position reports to the Executive Director.

The Veteran Services Manager is often the first impression applicants have of our organization. Excellent communication skills and comfortability working with veterans living with PTSD and/or TBI is a must. The Veteran Services Manager serves as the primary contact for veteran-related programming, ensures prompt and consistent application processing, and supports veterans as they progress through our Service/Therapeutic Companion Dog Training Program. Our Veteran Services Manager is responsible for strengthening and cultivating existing and new relationships with our veteran/dog teams, program graduates, team members, community, Board Members, and other stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure veteran data is complete, accurate, consistently updated, and securely stored;
  • Communicate the program needs, successes, and challenges to the Board of Directors, Management Team, and staff, and makes appropriate suggestions for improvement;
  • Serve as staff liaison to our graduate teams on the Veteran Graduate Committee and in the Operation Graduate Training (OGT) Program.
  • Responsible for application processes (e.g., record management, and applicant communication, applicant interviews, etc.);
  • Lead the applicant review process and monthly review committee meetings;
  • Collaborate with Adoptions and Foster Specialist regarding dog-related veteran needs;
  • Execute contracts with veteran/dog teams;
  • Consistent communication with incoming, participating, and graduate veterans according to established protocols/milestones;
  • Serve as the first line of communication regarding veteran-related program issues and triage/elevate appropriately;
  • Work with Training Program Manager regarding benchmark activities and testing;
  • Execute and track regular participant survey distribution, collection, and analysis;
  • Serves as organization representative and engages in community outreach with veteran support organizations;
  • Occasional travel throughout the state of Arizona is required;
  • Supports site operations (e.g., safety and security of training building/campus, serves as an emergency contact for site security, etc.);
  • Represent the organization at meetings and events as directed (e.g., graduation ceremonies, outreach events, annual fundraisers, etc.);
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human services, nonprofit, or related field;
  • Two years of case management and/or social work experience;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to provide administrative support (e.g., phone support, recordkeeping, filing, organizing, and data entry, etc.);
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and effectively manage workload in a positive and adaptable manner;
  • Excellent organizational,verbal, and written communication skills;
  • Availability to work outside of normal business hours (as needed);
  • Ability to coordinate with other team members, communicate effectively, and take direction from organization management;
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, database(s), internet applications, and ability to learn new software;
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the United States Military, PTS/TBI, and service animals;
  • Previous experience working with program development and implementation;
  • Must be comfortable working in the presence of dogs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in human services, nonprofit, or related fields;
  • Prior military experience and/or experience in veteran-related and/or mental health services;
  • Experience working with service animals and/or organizations that provide service animals.

Salary range $35,000 - $50,000 and commensurate with education and experience.

Must have a valid driver’s license and safe, reliable transportation, and be willing to travel within the state of Arizona (up to 25%), with availability during evening/weekend hours (as needed). Offer for employment is contingent upon a clear criminal background check.
