PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

This is an exciting opportunity to join CPKC in an entry-level position, where no previous railroad experience is required. Conductors have one of the most unique and challenging jobs available to North Americans. As a conductor, your responsibilities include switching cars, making or splitting up trains in yards, or moving cars between yards, sidings or tracks. Conductors keep CPKC and North America's economy moving. This entry-level union position can lead to career growth as a Yard Foreperson, Locomotive Engineer or management.

Sign on Bonus

New hire Conductors will receive a $10,000 signing bonus!

  • Must commit to work for CPKC for two years or the signing bonus will be repayable.
  • Current and previous CPKC employees are not eligible to receive the signing bonus

The average conductor earns approximately $100,000 annually, with the ability to make up to $128,500.


TRAINING

CPKC provides 16-20 weeks of paid in-class and field training for a solid understanding of our safety practices, rules and operations. You will earn $26.62 per hour in classroom training and a 5% pay increase every 6 months until reaching the full rate after 24 months - $33.27 per hour. Training will consist of classroom and on the job training.


POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Work in either train or yard service depending on their seniority;
  • Carry out specific instructions detailing a train's route and specific movements;
  • Handle the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling device;
  • Observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting movement of train;
  • Signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using specific signals, or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back-up, set or release air brakes;
  • Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in an emergency situation, as stipulated in the operating rules;
  • Move on and off moving or stationary equipment while train is performing industrial, station, or yard switching;
  • Ride moving car by hanging onto grab irons or ladder, sometimes for extended periods of time;
  • Fill out forms including train orders and switch lists and prepares required clear and legible reports;
  • Must be constantly alert to changing conditions and events and take safe and responsible action as required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED);
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Must be at least 18 years old;
  • Valid U.S. passport; allowing entry/re-entry into Canada;
  • Work irregular hours, including holidays, weekends, days and nights and for periods of time up to 12 hours;
  • Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions;
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. on occasion
  • Must be able to pass the required examinations, read and understand safety instructions, books of rules, instructions and regulations, timetables, bulletins, waybills, placards, and other written or printed material.

Medical Requirements:
CPKC is committed to the safety and health of its employees and the general public. This position is a safety critical all new hires will be required to complete a pre-employment medical that includes a physical, vision, hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessments. Qualification drug test(s) are also required.

  • Driver’s License Verification
  • Last 3 years of driving history
  • Last 7 years of employment history; includes military service
  • Social Security number verification
