Denison University seeks (2) two Theatrical Designers who bring expertise in two of the following areas – Scenic, Costume, or Lighting Design. Each designer may have one primary area of expertise and one secondary but will work across departments and with the other designer to provide students and faculty the opportunity to work with a range of styles and approaches. Each Designer role is a full-time, 10-month, continuing administrative staff position serving as a resident designer at the Eisner Center for the Performing Arts and teaching one course per semester in the department of Theatre.

Successful candidates will be committed to sharing the design process with undergraduates and contributing to equitable and inclusive creative spaces. Positions begin August 2023.

Essential Job Functions
The Eisner Center and the departments of Music, Theatre, and Dance produce two musicals, four plays, and two dance concerts per year. Depending on areas of expertise, exact design roles will vary, examples might include scenic designing two productions and costume designing six, or scenic designing four and lighting designing six. Productions are also supplemented with guest designers.
  • Provide clear, timely communication of design work including, initial research and concept ideas, preliminary sketches, final renderings and drafting, and/or fabric swatches, light plots, or other design-area specific paperwork.
  • Participate fully in the production process by initiating concept conversations with directors and choreographers, attending production meetings, adhering to deadlines established by the Production Coordinator, attending technical and dress rehearsals, and responding to rehearsal and production report requests in a timely manner.
  • Ensure designs meet conceptual aims of the production through collaboration with directors, designers, and choreographers, and work closely with production staff to ensure the project limitations of time and budget are met.
  • If designing costumes, work collaboratively with the Eisner Center Costume Shop Supervisor in the realization of the costume designs with direct, hands-on involvement in their creation.
  • If designing scenery, work collaboratively with the Eisner Center scene shop and technical staff in the realization of the scenic design, specifically in the areas of scenic painting and props.
  • If designing lighting, work collaboratively with the Eisner Center technical staff on the hands-on implementation of the design and generally advise on repertory lighting plots in the Eisner performance spaces.
  • Provide guidance and design assistance as needed to smaller productions or performers being presented by the Eisner Center.
  • Teach one introduction level design course per semester in the Department of Theatre, such as Elements of Scenic and Lighting Design or Elements of Costume and Makeup Design (Or co-teach should areas of expertise differ) Supervise students in assistant or independent design projects and promote student engagement in the design process.

Minimum Qualifications
Required:
BA with a concentration in theatre, design, or related area (or) theatrical design work with at least two areas of concentration as demonstrated via portfolio submission.

Key Attributes:
A record of collaborative work with faculty staff in both educational and artistic contexts.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of appropriate software based on areas of expertise, such as AutoCAD or Vectorworks, Adobe Creative Suite, or Qlab to communicate design ideas as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
An MFA in Theatrical Design or terminal degree in a related area.
Experience teaching undergraduate design courses and mentoring students.
Creative or collaborative work in additional areas of design, such as projection or sound design, or additional areas of academic or creative inquiry.
