  • Current unrestricted license from the Arkansas State Board of Nursing to practice as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in the State of Arkansas
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Professionals Certification

Job Description

  • Summary: The Telephone Triage Nurse assures that communication with each caller will be managed in a prompt, professional and tactful manner. The caller's symptoms and complaints will be assessed and triaged using the nursing process, approved guidelines, and protocols in order to assist in obtaining the appropriate level of care and/or self-care advice. You may instruct the patient to go to the ER if it is an emergency, schedule an appointment with a medical provider, provide lab reports to the patient, send a message about the patient to a medical provider, or refill a prescription on behalf of a medical provider according to specific instructions and protocols. You must assure that all communication and tasks performed are thoroughly documented in the patient's chart within an electronic medical record system.
  • Works under the direct supervision of licensed medical provider(s), responsible for providing direct and/or indirect care to all patients visiting the clinic according to policy guidelines
  • Must be available to work from 8 AM to 5 PM through regular workdays
  • Actively participate in new employee orientation, staff meetings, continuous quality improvement, and periodic performance/protocol evaluations and development
  • Maintain current nursing licensure by completing applications for renewal in a timely manner and by complying with all requirements for continuing education
  • Attendance is an essential function of this job
  • Acts as a resource within the clinic to other staff members and patients
  • Participates as a team member and promotes teamwork by assisting others with department activities
  • Fulfills administrative/clerical duties as necessary
  • Serves as liaison between patient and medical provider for medication questions and refills
  • Represents the clinic in person, over the telephone and in the community in a professional manner
  • Assists in maintaining an efficient, safe, secure, orderly, and aseptic environment of care for all patients and employees
  • Is familiar with and abides by OSHA Standards, Hazardous Materials, Universal Precautions, use of personal protective equipment, Evacuation, Fire, Disaster, and Safety Plans
  • This is a safety-sensitive position.

Required Knowledge and Ability

  • Must be capable of making independent nursing decisions
  • Must be able to work well under stress and relate to the general public, nurses, and physicians in a tactful manner
  • Must have adequate typing skills and basic computer knowledge
  • Knowledge of HIPPA
  • Knowledge of basic principles of health promotion, prevention, and motivation
  • Knowledge of medical office protocols and ability to quickly gain specific knowledge of current operational protocols
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and appropriate abbreviations
  • Knowledge of the Arkansas Nursing Practice Act
  • Ability to use PC to input data and navigate EMR
  • Ability to multitask and remain compassionate
  • Ability to read and comprehend medical instructions, short correspondence, letters, and memos
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other medical offices, ERs, and specialists to coordinate services for patients
  • Ability or willingness to learn to use office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones, and copiers
  • Ability to prioritize and allocate resources

The Telephone Nurse Consultant will be assigned a workstation, computer terminal, and telephonic equipment in a regular office environment. The nurse must have good manual and finger dexterity, excellent verbal and written communication, hearing and visual acuity and color distinction. The nurse must sit in front of a computer screen for prolonged periods of time. Occasional standing and walking. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
