Job Description

  • Prepares surgical, autopsy and neurological human tissues for frozen sections for analysis and evaluation by Pathologists in order to diagnose diseases, in accordance with standard departmental procedures. Performs frozen sections, as required, using a cryomicrotome. Stains frozen sections with Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and other stains, as needed.
  • Embeds processed tissue in paraffin, assuring proper orientation of the tissue, and reembeds improperly embedded tissues as needed, assuring accuracy in accordance with generally accepted Pathology and departmental procedures.
  • Accurately performs waived, moderate and high complexity testing using manual and automated processes. Complies with all regulatory agency guidelines (CLIA 88, The Joint Commission, CAP, FDA).
  • Reviews quality control and determines the acceptability of testing, patient results, and instrument function by applying the principles of QA/QC.
  • Prepares reagents and controls, preps samples for further testing (e.g. embedding, staining, etc.). Keeps work areas well stocked, clean, neat and orderly.

Qualifications

  • Two-year Associate (AA) Degree from an accredited histotechnology program, OR completion of a certificate program or a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician / Histotechnologist training program OR on-the-job training with at least 3 years of comprehensive histology laboratory experience in a Histopathology Lab in the U.S., Canada, or an accredited laboratory.
  • Certification as HT or HTL by a nationally recognized program, i.e., ASCP, or completion of certification must be obtained within one year from date of hire.
