Summary

The City of Wasilla is currently recruiting for openings in Public Works as a Parks and Properties Technician I.

As a Parks and Properties Tech I, you will be required to perform ground maintenance activities, basic carpentry in repair of structures, and service equipment by performing routine maintenance and repairs. Every summer, you will aid in overseeing 3-5 seasonal employees in work crews performing various ground maintenance assignments. For more information on job duties, please see the essential functions below. Note: having a Class A CDL is highly preferred.

Your schedule will be Monday-Friday 7:00 am- 3:30 pm with a half hour unpaid lunch. You will be working with a crew of three other Tech I's, under the supervision of a Tech II and the Maintenance Supervisor.

This is an exempt, full-time position with benefits. The Parks and Property Tech I is an IUOE Local 302 represented full-time benefitted position with the City of Wasilla and reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Job Duties

The responsibilities listed below are illustrative of the various types of duties that may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Perform all tasks and assignments in accordance with City of Wasilla’s safety program.
  • With little or no supervision, perform ground maintenance activities by mowing lawns, planting flower beds, hanging flower baskets, planting and pruning trees, trimming hedges, removing weeds, watering grounds, raking, and disposing of leaves and refuse.
  • Will perform basic carpentry in repair of structures to include buildings and parks.
  • Design and install floral displays in indoor and outdoor settings by planning flowerbeds and planting flowers and decorative flower gardens.
  • Knowledge of plants (annual, and perennials), and trees that grow in this climate.
  • Maintain Wasilla Aurora Cemetery by mowing, tree removal, grave leveling, sod cutting and placement and remediation.
  • Drive tractors with mower attachment to maintain park landscapes and City property. Operate backhoe to dig trenches for water and irrigation system.
  • Order necessary supplies as needed.
  • Carry out staff management function by scheduling, organizing, training, and directing temporary summer workers and/or volunteers.
  • Service equipment by performing routine maintenance and repairs. Replace worn or damaged parts such as hoses, wiring and belts in machines and equipment such as truck or riding mower.
  • Assist performing minor facility construction improvement, repair, and maintenance such as painting, minor plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, and welding.
  • Assist in performing preventive maintenance and repairs such as replacing light bulbs and replacing ballast as needed. Replacing filters on HVAC units as needed. Testing emergency lighting and repairing as needed.
  • Winter snow removal to include parking lots, sidewalks, and bike paths.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and/or Education:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • One year experience in parks, buildings, and grounds maintenance.
  • Experience operating small equipment and hand tools.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must possess current First Aid and CPR certifications within 45 days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (Class A CDL highly preferred) at time of application and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must provide a current (dated within 30 days of request) driving record from the state in which driver’s license is held.

Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and express ideas clearly and concisely both in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to learn basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical component repair/replacement, and glass replacement.
  • Knowledge of turf, grass, flowers, cemetery maintenance, and applying fertilizers.
  • Homeland Security orientation tests (Incident Command Systems) will be required as a term of employment taken on-line Entry level IS-100.b within fifteen days of date hire and IS-200.b, IS-700.a, and IS-800.b within 45 days of date of hire.
  • Knowledge in the methods and techniques used in the general maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
