Job Overview


The Formula/Human Milk Tech Senior is responsible for assisting clinical professionals, such as Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Nurse Practitioners and Physicians, in providing optimal nutritional care to hospitalized patients through accurate, safe, and timely handling, storage, preparation and distribution of formulas and/or human milk to patients and families. Additionally, provides basic education and guidance to both inpatient and outpatient families.

Hours per week: Flex, variable
Shift: The Human Milk and Formula Lab is open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily. The Flex role will be called upon to cover time off requests and illnesses with 10-hour shifts Monday-Friday and weekend shifts 7-10 hours.

Qualifications

  • Education: Associates degree in a related field is required.
  • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of healthcare-related experience, preferably in a hospital setting
  • Equivalency: Minimum of two years of college credit in a healthcare-related field, such as Medical Nutrition, Anatomy and/or Physiology or certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or as a Lactation Counselor (CLC) or Advanced Lactation Consultant (ALC) may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Certification(s): If the team member works in the Human Milk Lab, certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Employees in this position may work in designated roles in either the Human Milk Lab, Formula Lab or in both areas. In addition, not all of these functions may be required at all Children’s Hospital Colorado locations.

  • Retrieves, reviews and verifies patient human milk and/or formula orders via EMR; Prepares human milk and/or formula according to provider orders using aseptic technique.
  • Delivers prepared human milk and/or formula to the designated locations in an accurate and timely manner. Triages formula and human milk lab calls and in person interactions.
  • Communicates with supervisor, RD’s, RN’s, and care teams regarding concerns related to human milk and/or formula orders, mixing recipes, storage, and administration.
  • Maintains a clean, sanitary, safe and orderly formula/human milk lab, ensuring department standards are met and that all cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting activities of storage areas, preparation areas and equipment are conducted and documented in accordance with relevant policies and procedures and in compliance with federal, state and local health regulations.
  • Receives expressed human milk from mothers who are dropping off; records and maintains an accurate inventory of human milk stored in the lab; works with care team to consider factors impacting feedings to be prepared; calculates ingredient components, and measures all ingredient components for all human milk mixtures.
  • Scans all human milk at various intervals to ensure accurate tracking and safe delivery; educates parents for proper labeling, transport and storage of human milk; tracks and maintains a breast pump rental/loan program for families and staff.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of formula lab supplies and formulas by performing daily inventory and stocking; rotates formulas and supplies using FIFO (first in, first out); assesses daily utilization of formulas and alerts supervisor of concerns for surges in use and stock; works with RD’s and Clinical Nutrition leadership on approval for use of non-formulary formulas, for accuracy of ingredient calculations, and regarding stock of non-formulary formula.
  • Calculates ingredient components, and measures ingredient components for formula mixtures; works with RD’s and medical care team to clarify physician orders for formula that may not be ordered correctly, or may not be appropriate for the patient; provide basic education to patients and families on formula mixing instructions where appropriate and under RD supervision.
  • Submit: work request for Milk Lab/Lactation room repairs
