The Upward Bound Summer Academy takes place on the campus of the University of New Hampshire where students live in a UNH residence hall, eat at a UNH dining hall, and attend classes in academic buildings throughout the campus. UB teachers are committed to education and to helping young people and have the opportunity to create an experiential curriculum that is both interesting and inspiring. The 2023 six-week summer program is scheduled to begin on Sunday, June 25 with an end date of Friday, August 4 excluding weekends.
Teachers will have two, 90-minute classes and will support students during a “lunch & ketchup” period on either a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule (9am-2pm) depending on your subject.
In addition to classroom responsibilities, we also require teachers join us for one weekly staff meeting. Teachers will also prepare mid-summer and final student evaluations to help students strengthen their academic performance.
Upward Bound Staff will provide pre-summer training on both an individual level and at a full staff afternoon retreat to help guide curriculum and to introduce the Upward Bound program. While working predominantly with classroom students, the teacher will have the opportunity to interact with the entire program during our No Discount Policy ceremony and work across disciplines to create a Creative Problem-Solving afternoon for students.
- Desire to help disadvantaged youth succeed.
- Sensitivity and maturity level to successfully work in a summer academic program with high school aged students.
- Ability to interact with diverse constituencies including program & UNH staff, parents/guardians, and students.
- Completion of an AA/AS/BS/BA program in relevant field.
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.
- Experience in direct instruction of high school students.
- Experience participating in a TRIO, or similar, pre-college program.
- Experience working with students from low-income backgrounds, multi-ethnic backgrounds and/or who are potential first-generation college graduates.
