Mental Health Professionals Make a Difference

At NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, our Mental Health professionals unite the most respected minds in research, education and care. We are home to some of the nation's top clinicians and researchers in behavioral health. It's a proud tradition - and a premier opportunity. Located at the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic within NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the newly established Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed to help individuals, within Washington Heights, Inwood, and the surrounding areas, receive intensive services to stabilize their psychiatric disorders and provides comprehensive psychiatric care, including those with co-morbid substance use issues. The IOP provides various intensive services based on clinical need and seeks to provide a diversion from inpatient hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Our diverse patient and family population spans a wide range of cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The IOP provides care to individuals and families that come from marginalized and underserved, lower socioeconomic status backgrounds; primarily those identifying as Latinx and African American and many of whom are not currently engaged in (or have not had previous) mental health services. To promote stabilization for the individual, the IOP uses evidence-based interventions such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and others within various modalities such as group, individual, psychopharmacological, and psychosocial interventions. The IOP will offer multiple interventions 2 to 3 days per week for 6 weeks. The multidisciplinary team works intensively with the individual and family, as needed, to engage in care and provide targeted treatment while working directly with the community to promote linkages for long-term psychiatric care.

Provides educational services for patients, families and staff members through individual and group presentations and in-services.
