This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  • three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  • any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  • a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
  • a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.


POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assist the Structures Research Center Manager in the Administration, direction and supervision of all activities at the Structures Research Center including supervising all lab work, identifying research needs, setting research and testing priorities and scheduling and budgeting. Acts on behalf of the structures Research Manager during absences from the office as assigned. Acts as lead engineer for bridge tests. Performs preliminary analysis needed to determine the critical members, critical member sections, and proper instrumentation. Determines the type of load test and the location and sequence of loads. Monitors the on-site data and bridge during the tests to ensure safety of the public, personnel, and bridge. Facilitates the bridge tests with local agencies assuring that all of the logistical elements are addressed and coordinates the in-house personnel and equipment required in performing the tests. Signs and seals Bridge Test Reports and/or Load Rating Reports as required.


Supervises personnel assigned to the incumbent. Performs employee evaluation, timesheets and leave approvals.


Acts as Project Manager on research funded through the Research Center.


Acts as Principal Investigator on in-house research and produce signed and sealed test reports as required.


Provides detailed reviews of bridge testing and research projects and sign and seal documents as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge, in-depth, of structural design codes for bridges and highway components; Skills in structural design and analysis of prestressed concrete, reinforced concrete and steel members; Skills in interpretation and application of various structural design codes, including American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications; Ability to perform bridge load ratings in accordance with AASHTO Manual for Bridge Design Evaluation (MBE); Knowledge, detailed, of structural testing including dynamic, static, and fatigue testing; Knowledge and understanding of the abilities and limitations of data acquisition equipment and transducers used in structural testing; Skills, excellent, in the use of structural design software, Computer Aided Design & Drafting (CADD), MathCAD, and Microsoft Office; Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally including the preparation of written reports and oral presentations concerning ongoing and completed work; Ability to work effectively with a group as part of a team; Ability to be proactive and work independently; Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with others; Ability to supervise other employees.


REQUIRED LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Registered as a Professional Engineer Pursuant to Chapter 471, Florida Statutes.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Registered as a Professional Engineer Pursuant to Chapter 471, Florida Statutes, and two years of Post-registration experience.
