Job description

New York Center for Child Development has an immediate opening for a head teacher for our collaborative integrated class in a community based head start in Queens. Class of 15 (7 with IEPs) in a team, taught with a general education teacher and a Teaching Assistant.

One of the Following is Required:

  • NYS Teaching Certification, Permanent Special Education
  • Professional Certification Students with Disabilities (Birth-2nd Grade)
  • Initial Certification Students with Disabilities (Birth-2nd Grade)

Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual (Spanish) a plus but not essential

Integrated Classroom Teacher Duties/Responsibilities:

Reports to: Education Director, Home and Community Services

Quality of Work:

  • Designs/modifies and implements curriculum relevant for the classroom population
  • Responsible for a safe and clean environment
  • Monthly curriculum is obvious in the classroom environment
  • Art reflects children’s work and an open ended philosophy (process not product)
  • Curriculum reflects real life experiences for the age level of children in the class
  • Curriculum reflects sensitivity and support to cultures represented in classroom community
  • Classroom environment reflects developmentally appropriate communication with children that engages them at their level
  • Curriculum incorporates activities that contribute to IEP goals of students in the classroom

Productivity:

  • Works closely with Teacher Assistant, Collaborating General Education Teacher and Teacher Assistant daily and develops curriculum on a monthly basis
  • Mentors Teacher Assistant in NYCCD, SED, and DOH guidelines for best practice in early childhood education, on a weekly basis
  • Engages in communication with Teacher Assistant daily regarding specific children and their progress toward IEP goals
  • Counsels Teacher Assistant in November regarding their performance in the classroom setting
  • Evaluates Teacher Assistants in May

Interpersonal Relations and Communication:

  • Maintains attendance daily calling parent within an hour of start of school if child is absent
  • Represents school/child at annual CPSE meetings and requested review meetings
  • Informs all team members of any changes in child’s family or health or IEP mandates
  • Provides parents with opportunities to influence curriculum development and be part of the classroom

Reliability and Dependability:

  • Follows school wide policies and procedures
  • Arrives to work on time ready to engage with students and parents and staff
  • Signs in and out with exact time of arrival and departure
  • Calls into front office (and NYCCD Supervisor) if absent or running late
  • Fills out necessary paper work for planned absences and early leave for school
  • Dresses appropriately for working with preschool population
  • Seeks out Supervisor when in need of assistance

Pay: $58,000.00 - $68,000.00 per year
