We are seeking a Social Service Assistant (SSA) Generalist to join our Office of Child Welfare team. Primarily stationed at Bend though will offer cover Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crooke Counties as needed.

As an SSA, you will:
  • Support the engagement of the client.
  • Support the rapport or the helping relationship with the client.
  • Contribute to risk and safety assessments and the associated decisions and plans.
  • Contribute to the comprehensive child and family assessments.
  • Support the development of a case plan with the family.
  • Support casework decision-making.
  • Support essential casework activities designed to facilitate change.
  • Contribute to the review and evaluation of client progress.
  • Actively seek to achieve the ODHS goal of integrity, stewardship, responsibility, respect, and professionalism.
  • Transport children to and from visits
  • Supervise/ observe family time and take notes.
What you need to qualify
  • One year of experience assisting professionals in one or more specialized social programs such as family services, children services, senior services, mental or developmental disability services, substance abuse programs, juvenile corrections programs or occupational skills programs, or;
  • Possession of a current certification in child development, early childhood education, addiction counseling preparation or juvenile corrections, or;
  • 45 quarter hours, or 30 semester hours of college course work in sociology, psychology, early childhood education, criminal justice, human services, juvenile corrections, or occupational skills training, or;
  • An associate degree in a field not closely related to social work/human services and six months of human services-related experience (e.g. work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, mental or physical disabilities, juvenile prevention, health, cultural competencies, and/or inadequate housing).
Essential attributes
We are looking for candidates with:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, service providers, and clients in person, over the telephone and in writing, respecting cultural and ethnic differences.
  • Ability to gather documents from multiple (and sometimes unwilling) sources and to organize such documents and notes into a case file and prepare clear and concise reports using computer.
  • Experience utilizing time management, organization, and prioritization skills to meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with at risk or other high need youth and diverse populations.
  • Good de-escalation, conflict, and behavioral management skills with basic knowledge of trauma-informed practice
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.

Working conditions
The duties in this position include working with challenging and sometimes hostile clients. Work is done in the office and field. This work requires a valid Driver’s license and the ability to drive during your scheduled work hours. This position requires working a flexible schedule as a condition of employment with a normal workday of 8 hours, from 8 AM to 5 PM; however, working hours may be adjusted within a given week. Occasional compensated overtime during evening and weekend work may be required. Requires ability to use computer technology, including a working knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Word and OR-Kids.
