Shipping/Receiving Clerk


Primary responsibilities is on the processes involved in the receipt and/or shipping of material to ensure items being stowed or shipped meet customer requirements. May use anti-static devices. Reports to Designated Lead, Supervisor, or Manager.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, examines, classifies, accepts, rejects, and disposes of material as per regulations.
  • Performs clerical and physical tasks in connection with shipping goods of the establishment in which employed and receiving incoming shipments
  • Visual examination or use of measuring devices and techniques may be performed under mentoring assistance of senior personnel.
  • Able to use basic processes of inspection/examination procedures for material.
  • Able to read specifications and photographs as/if required in DLA contract.
  • Able to use blueprints, schematics, etc., under mentoring of senior personnel.
  • Load material on and off of skids, pallets, stands.
  • Prepare labels as required.
  • Able to prepare basic reports.
  • Operate tools and equipment in performance of duties.
  • Receive data from and input data to automated systems in performance of receiving/shipping duties.
  • May operate material handling equipment as assigned and hold appropriate license.
  • Count, weigh, record data, apply tags and labels.
  • May direct and coordinate the activities of other workers engaged in handling goods to be shipped or being received
  • Follows established guidelines for day-to-day, routine tasks and receives specific guidance from supervisor or other officials in handling unusual, non-routine problems
  • Able to make preventive maintenance adjustments to related equipment.
  • Verifying that orders are accurately filled by comparing items and quantities of goods gathered for shipment against documents
  • Insuring that shipments are properly packaged, identified with shipping information, and loaded into transporting vehicles, and preparing and keeping records of goods shipped, e.g., manifests, bills of lading
  • Verifying the correctness of incoming shipments by comparing items and quantities unloaded against bills of lading, invoices, manifests, storage receipts, or other records
  • Checking for damaged goods, insuring that goods are appropriately identified for routing to departments within the establishment, and preparing and keeping records of goods received.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.
  • High school diploma or GED required. May substitute experience for education at the rate of one year of general experience for one year of high school.
  • Minimum three (3) months general work experience which will demonstrate ability to perform requirements of position. No specific experience required
  • Knowledgeable of governing supply systems/programs, policies, nomenclature, work methods, manuals or other established guidelines
  • Ability to work in GSS-Army
  • Must have or be able to obtain licenses/certifications as needed to perform duties.
  • Must have a valid and current state driver’s license.
  • Must be able to operate a government general-purpose vehicle
  • Must be able to obtain license to use a forklift within 30 days of selection
  • Must be able to complete paperwork associated with the position as required
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, complex environment
  • Must be able to read and understand Technical Manuals, Technical Bulletins, Army Regulations and Department of the Army Pamphlets
  • Must possess basic computer skills
  • Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Must have an ability to meet physical demands and pass any related medical examination requirements required to perform daily assigned tasks
  • May need the ability to obtain and maintain a government Common Access Card (CAC)
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to successfully complete Inert Certification training requirements.
  • Position may require travel.
  • Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Must utilize all proper lifting procedures and practices.
  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Must be able to work at heights.
  • Must be able to climb in and out of vehicles of various sizes and heights
  • Must be able to work under pressure and strenuous conditions.
  • Must be able to meet short suspense dates.
  • Must be able to conduct work in the out-of-doors area with potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions (i.e. extreme temperatures, high humidity, rain and blowing dust).
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged periods of stooping; climbing; standing; and sitting for long periods of uninterrupted time.
  • May require shift work.
  • May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • During the usual work period, the worker may be exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable.
