Job Title: Laborer I

Department: Public Infrastructure

Reports To: Crew Leader/Supervisor/Director

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Public Works Laborer 1 is responsible for the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and for performing manual labor activities as needed and/or required. Work includes but is not limited to: grass cutting, landscaping, tree and shrub trimming, general park maintenance, picking up garbage and emptying Village maintained containers, snow plowing, shoveling and salting public walks and parking lots. General road maintenance including filling pot holes and asphalt repair, cleaning catch basins, clearing branches on parkways and alleys and any other duties that may be assigned. The position is one of emergency responding, overtime and long hours is mandatory at times.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: Must have basic computer skills to use as needed or necessary.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have a valid drivers license from the state in which the employee resides and the ability to attain and keep for the duration of employment a Class B CDL within 90 days of employment.

Other Skills and Abilities and Qualifications: Must have the ability to safely operate the following equipment: lawn movers both push and riders, chainsaw and other hand tools including but not limited to broom's, shovels, rakes, weed whacker etc., the ability to safely drive and operate a pickup truck with and without a snow plow, a dump truck with and without a snow plow and tree chipper.
