LIBRARY CLERK Thornton Library (P/T)

General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, supports the library mission by performing a variety of duties including assisting Library staff with programs, assisting patrons with locating materials and assisting with circulation duties including processing holds, handling overdue functions, preparing materials to be shelved and ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for library users and staff.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class provides supports the library mission by performing a variety of duties including assisting library staff with programs, assisting patrons with locating materials and assisting with circulation duties including processing holds, handling overdue functions, preparing materials to be shelved and ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for library users and staff. Work requires some public contact and is performed under regular supervision. Position will be assigned within the Library as needed by the Director, but will be supervised by the Branch Manager on a day-to-day basis, when not assigned otherwise. Position will be evaluated for timeliness and accuracy of work activities as well as customer service effectiveness through observation, conference, patron feedback and annual performance evaluations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Knowledge of books, authors, and readers interests; stays current with adult and teen literature, relevant technology, and library trends.
  • sorts and shelves library materials; shelf reads daily to maintain shelf order.
  • Checks out, discharges, and renews all library materials.
  • Checks and empties all book drops.
  • Assists in the opening and closing of the library.
  • Registers patrons for library cards, issues, and renews cards. Creates and updates patron records regarding Internet, expiration dates, fines, etc.
  • Calculate and collect funds due from the public.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the scope of knowledge and refer to employee of higher classification as appropriate.
  • May perform portions of the work of higher classified positions as required.
  • Assisting with library programs and/or displays, as directed.
  • Utilizing various types of office equipment including computers, cash register, copier and fax machine.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Greets and directs library patrons, and charges and discharges library materials in accordance with established library policies and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, patiently, and courteously with other employees, patrons, and other community members.
  • Must be able to hear, comprehend and respond to library patrons both in person and in telephone conversations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper telephone etiquette; ability to use phone systems; ability to take messages.

  • Ability to count money and make change.
  • Ability to prioritize work with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Use of basic office equipment including computer, keyboard, copier, fax machine, and calculator.
  • Ability to provide courteous public service and to present clear explanations of established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the library’s automated system.
  • Willingness to assist and support coworkers, contribute ideas, maintain flexibility, and be able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities or interruptions at once and to work positively and effectively within a team model.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, fingering, talking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pound of force occasionally; up to 10 pound of force frequently; and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to maintain records, match books with cards, read book spines, count monies, and operate a minicomputer.

Desirable Training And Experience

High school graduate with some library/office experience; of any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $13.00 per hour
