Project Engineer

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

Uses electrical, mechanical, chemical and computer engineering principals to provide a holistic design of instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for simultaneous projects spanning multiple customers. Design shall include the following subsystems/aspects of an I&C project – field instrumentation, control panels, loop drawings, camera and security subsystems and networking.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Field Instrumentation
  • Make field instrumentation selections based on the following: (a) what was quoted in our scope letter, (b) the requirements as defined in the Contract Documents, (c) any standardized products currently in use at the facility, and (d) the project budget.
  • Interpret the Contract Documents to determine installation requirements and appropriate mounting hardware, sunshields, surge protection, etc.
  • Generate a Field Instrumentation Submittal for review and approval by Engineer and Owner on project.
  • Respond to and follow-up on submittal comments.
  • Panel Design
  • Design panel hardware drawings for MR Systems-provided control and network panels based on the following: (a) what was quoted in our scope letter, (b) the requirements as defined in the Contract Documents, (c) any standardized products currently in use at the facility, and (d) the project budget.
  • Interpret the Contract Documents to determine installation requirements (e.g., panel sizing, interior versus exterior location, etc.).
  • Development of the hardwired IO list using standard templates.
  • Panel design shall consist of a bill of materials consisting of “major buyout” items (e.g., enclosure, PLC hardware, network hardware) and the IO list.
  • Coordinating and managing the efforts of drafting group to efficiently generate AutoCAD drawings.
  • Generate a Panel Hardware Submittal for review and approval by Engineer and Owner on project.
  • Respond to and follow-up on submittal comments.
  • Perform a basic panel checkout excluding PLC programming (e.g., hardware placement, electrical continuity, etc.).
  • Loop Drawings
  • Design loop drawings per the requirements of the Contract Documents.
  • Coordinating and managing the efforts of drafting group to efficiently generate AutoCAD drawings.
  • Generate a Loop Drawings Submittal for review and approval by Engineer and Owner on project.
  • Respond to and follow-up on submittal comments.
  • Camera & Security Subsystem Design
  • Select camera and security system hardware (e.g., card readers, fence monitors) and software based on the following: (a) what was quoted in our scope letter, (b) the requirements as defined in the Contract Documents, (c) any standardized products currently in use at the facility, and (d) the project budget.
  • Interpret the Contract Documents to determine installation requirements.
  • Generate a Camera & Security Subsystem Submittal for review and approval by Engineer and Owner on project.
  • Respond to and follow-up on submittal comments.
  • Network Design
  • Working with MR Systems’ IT personnel, design SCADA/PLC control systems networks based on the following: (a) networking best practices, (b) what was quoted in our scope letter and (c) the requirements as defined in the Contract Documents.
  • Select copper and fiber cabling and network hardware based on the above criteria plus (a) any standardized products currently in use at the facility and (b) the project budget.
  • Use Microsoft Visio to generate detailed network diagrams showing all network hardware (servers, PLCs, workstations, switches, firewalls, radios, etc.) and all applicable communications paths and protocols (fiber, Ethernet, serial, radio, etc.).
  • Working with MR Systems’ IT personnel and HMI technical leads, assist in selecting SCADA and networking software.
  • Incorporate third-party equipment and systems into network diagrams, recognizing incompatibilities between MR Systems network and third-party networks.
  • Generate both Fiber and Network submittals (as appropriate for the project) for review and approval by Engineer and Owner on project.
  • Respond to and follow-up on submittal comments.
  • Other Documents (Design & Testing)
  • Although typically the role of the PLC Applications Engineer, have the ability to assist in generating a Control Narrative Submittal based on interpreting the Functional Description presented within the Contract Documents and our IO list.
  • Generate Factory Acceptance and Site Acceptance Test Procedures by revising up the previously approved Control Narrative Submittal and referencing our IO list.
  • Record Documents
  • Upon completion of startup activities, generate for submittal “As installed for Record” documentation for Panel Drawings, Loop Drawings and Network Diagrams. Work with startup team to populate information gathered during startup (e.g., field terminal numbers).
  • Develop Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Manuals by aggregating ISA datasheets generated during the Design document phase and manufacturers’ standard manuals/instructions. Submit for review and approval; respond to and follow-up on comments generated by the Engineer and Owner.
  • For a given project, develop the knowledge and expertise to lead design or submittal review meetings with the Engineer and Owner at the discretion of the Project Manager.
  • Become the Engineer and Owner’s trusted source of information regarding all design elements on a given project.
  • Ability to visit project site (whether existing or new facility) to consider, witness and document conditions at the project site for both sales support and project fulfillment requirements. Must be able to review and understand existing conditions to able to develop drawings, make material selections and engineer project based on both field conditions and project requirements.
  • Working and developing a relationship with vendors to obtain and review quotes as part of the hardware selection process to (a) ensure equipment accuracy and (b) to protect the project budget.
  • Provide support and assistance to MR Systems’ project team members from kickoff through startup and closeout. Act as the Lead Engineer for the project.
  • Receive, interpret, and incorporate the design of third-party hardware and systems into our designs.
  • Maintain Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and National Electrical Code (NEC) standards in all design efforts.
  • Have the ability to effectively make minor AutoCAD modifications to drawings packages. However, this role is NOT a draftspersons position. It shall be expected that all designs be drafted by a draftsperson with the Project Engineer managing that person’s efforts.
  • Become proficient using various troubleshooting tools and test equipment.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Administrative report to Project Engineering Manager.

Project report to Project Manager(s) of assigned projects.

Regular interface with Regional Manager(s), PLC Applications Engineer(s), HMI Applications Engineer(s), Manufacturing and Field Service of assigned projects.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Experience with field instrumentation hardware, control panel design and hardware and networking design and hardware is considered a strong plus.
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Microsoft Office
  • AutoCAD (preferred, but not required)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with customers, management, and other co-workers.
  • Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication.
  • Sitting for extended periods is common.
  • Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents.
  • No heavy lifting is expected. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, printers, scanners and copiers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is largely performed at one of MR Systems’ offices with occasional or periodic jobsite visits. Activities include extended periods of sitting and extensive work at a computer monitor.

TRAVEL

Estimated at 20 percent within GA, SC, NC, TN and AL. Visits to a project site to gather information, conduct meetings or otherwise meet with customers shall occur periodically.
