Position Locations:

1 Position - Ephrata, Washington – Grant County
1 Position – Electric City – Grant County

Career Season Length: 8.5 Months
March 16 – November 30

Provide technical support to a resource management program by gathering and/or reviewing data for habitat management of privately owned and state-owned lands.

Create new wildlife habitats and enhancing existing habitats and helping to provide a place for the public to hunt, fish, and recreate on private lands.

With your experience
you will provide sound recommendations resulting in healthy habitats which will enhance wildlife populations and recreational opportunity for the public.

develop and maintain contracts with private landowners for public hunting and fishing access.

Our Private Lands Habitat Technician,

  • Assess, enroll, and implement wildlife habitat projects on private lands.
  • Make recommendations for habitat enhancement based upon sound science.
  • Work closely with federal, state, and local agencies; NGOs; and private landowners for habitat enhancement based upon sound science.
  • Utilize sprayers to apply herbicide for the control of weeds at habitat restoration sites.
  • Install and maintain wildlife habitats using tractors, ATVs, and their implements.
  • Participate in Habitat Enhancement Project Implementation and Maintenance.
  • Ground-truthing hunter access contract legal descriptions; ensuring that all properties are signed appropriately; and correcting signage errors.
  • Monitor public use of private lands enrolled in hunter access program; maintain good safety and public relations practices; have continuous contact with the public responding to a variety of fish and wildlife inquiries or complaints; provide department information and resolve complaints; advise enforcement personnel of potentially illegal or disruptive actions.
  • Assist with implementing plant and wildlife surveys to monitor populations of interest such as game species and State and Federal priority species within the Columbia Basin.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Work in inclement weather over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud.
    • Walk, bend, stoop, while at times carrying up to 50 pounds.
    • Load and transport tractor and implements, equipment, and gear.
    • Work safely and efficiently around agricultural equipment, ATVs, and hand and power tools (e.g. shovels, box cutters).
    • Use critical thinking in collecting, recording, compiling, and summarizing data.
    • Follow oral and written directions.
    • Visually discriminate when identifying and distinguishing biological and physical features.
    • Complete required administrative paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Work independently and as a team member.
    • Work alone in remote areas.
    • Perform routine and repetitive work.
    • Perform in a punctual and dependable manner.
    • Willingness to accept supervision.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Extensive daily travel to work sites.
    • Occasional travel to meetings and training.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Tractors with a variety of implements, ATVs, UTVs, hand and power tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interacts with private landowners, NGOs, government agencies, and sportsmen’s groups.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Three (3) years of experience or college level course work in the field of fish, wildlife or habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or natural sciences.
Licenses:
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicators License, obtained within first 3 months from date of hire.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
  • Wildlife population relationships and ecology.
  • Wildlife habitat relationships.
  • Wildlife and vegetation survey methods.
  • Personal computer hardware and software (e.g., MS Office; ArcGIS).
  • Mobile computing hardware and software (e.g., Outlook; ArcGIS collector; Avenza).
  • Animal and plant species identification.
  • Wildlife and habitat management tools and field techniques.
  • Federal, state, local, and agency private lands conservation programs.
  • Agricultural and silvicultural practices.
  • Pesticide laws and application.
  • Pesticide applicators license.
  • Local and state land use laws.

Ability to:
  • Conduct field surveys to collect data.
  • Follow prescribed protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Conduct data analysis and make inferences from data.
  • Communicate effectively with other governmental agencies and private landowners.
