  • The President, UW Medicine Hospitals & Clinics (PH&C) and Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Washington position reports to the CEO, UW Medicine/Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine, University of Washington (CEO/EVPMA/Dean).

    The PH&C is the executive leader of UW Medicine’s hospitals and clinics and is a member of the senior management team of UW Medicine as an officer of the University of Washington. The PH&C will provide support and strategic guidance to the CEO/EVPMA/Dean and the UW Medicine Advisory Board for maintaining effective UW Medicine clinical operations using best practices across the hospitals and clinics.

    The PH&C has executive oversight responsibility for University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Medicine Primary Care Clinics, Airlift Northwest, UW Medicine Information Technology, UW Medicine Pharmacy Services, and Human Resource activities for the hospitals and clinics. The PH&C will also promote an understanding of healthcare industry trends and issues impacting UW Medicine’s clinical operations.

    The PH&C provides executive leadership that supports the mission, values, and strategic goals of UW Medicine and fosters effective and efficient UW Medicine clinical program operations, growth, and development.

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee the operations and performance of the UW Medicine hospitals and clinics.
  • Promote a UW Medicine management culture that emphasizes team collaboration, continuous improvement, accountability, and excellence in performance.
  • Elevate and be accountable for the measuring of metrics and improvement of health equity in clinical outcomes and decision making in all hospitals and ambulatory settings. A top-down attention to workplace safety of all faculty and staff with EDI and gender-bias at the forefront of equitable processes and policies.
  • Promote written and oral communications with superiors, peers, and subordinates that fosters the successful management of UW Medicine clinical operations.
  • Implement policies and procedures that will engage UW Medicine senior management and faculty leadership in UW Medicine operational policy setting.
  • Assure that the operational effectiveness of the various UW Medicine clinical units is optimized, balancing efficiency, quality, safety, cost, and access.
  • Ensure that UW Medicine clinical operations are supportive of UW Medicine’s teaching, clinical research and public service activities.
  • Serve as Chair of the UW Neighborhood Clinics Board, Chair of Airlift Board, and chair of other UW Medicine committees as designated by the CEO/EVPMA/Dean.
  • Work with the CEO/EVPMA/Dean to provide staff support to the UW Medicine Advisory Board.
  • Manage UW Medicine’s information technology systems and communicate to the CEO/EVPMA/Dean, the UW Medicine Advisory Board, and the boards of UW Medicine entities the planned design and implementation of strategic systems enhancements.
  • Develop a comprehensive set of operational performance metrics that are used throughout UW Medicine’s various clinical enterprises to track and report operational performance.
  • Ensure that UW Medicine’s clinical operations are in compliance with federal and state laws and University and external regulatory agency regulations, rules, and standards.
  • Ensure the effective utilization of and reporting on the physical and financial resources of UW Medicine clinical operations.
  • Promote UW Medicine’s position as a leading provider of regional clinical services through affiliations, marketing, and community relations.
  • Participate actively in the oversight of strategic planning for UW Medicine and the operational implementation of strategic plans with leadership teams at the hospitals, practice plans, and clinics.
  • In coordination with the UW Vice President for Human Resources, oversee human resource functions and labor relations that involve the UW Medicine hospitals and clinics.

  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Progressive healthcare executive leadership experience including at least five (5) years of experience as a senior management executive. Experience as the CEO or COO of an academic medical center or health system is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of medical school education and research activities, clinical service delivery systems, and the current and planned healthcare delivery system changes and regulatory reforms. Experience in a public healthcare organization is a plus. Union experience preferred.
  • Experience with capital planning, design, and construction
  • Experience managing the implementation of information technology systems
  • Track record of leading financial, cost management, and efficiency performance for a large healthcare organization
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Experience serving as external representation
  • Master's degree in business, health administration, or related field
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.
