The City of Laguna Beach is now looking to hire enthusiastic candidates for the position of Pool Lifeguard/Swim Instructor (Part-Time)!

The Position:
Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, Pool Lifeguards/Swim Instructor instruct swim classes, enforce pool rules and regulations, prevent accidents, perform rescues of persons in distress, and perform facility clean-up and maintenance at the Laguna Beach High School and community pool facility. Also performs related duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator.


Off Season Schedule: Weekdays: 6:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m./Weekends: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Summer Schedule:
Flexible schedule options available during a variety of shift times. Consistent availability preferred for Swim Instructors.

The Application/Selection Process: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with a first review on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Interested candidates must submit a completed online application in order to be considered. Applications will be screened carefully and selected candidates will undergo an oral interview. First round interested will take place on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. The appointing hiring authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions.

Candidates selected for hire who are under the age of 18 must have a work permit (see link below). A work permit is not needed to participate in the interview or swim test.

Work Permit

A candidate selected for this position must successfully complete a police background check and a live-scan fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice.

Examples of Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Performs duties of lifeguarding at the pool
  • Supervises and assists with instructional programs
  • Performs facility clean up and maintenance
  • Performs locker room supervision
  • Maintains records and licenses for learn-to-swim program
  • Attends trainings
  • Assists Recreation Coordinator with implementing programs, special events, etc.
  • Performs customer services
  • Collects fees, sells pool passes and maintains related records
  • Other duties as assigned to assist the supervisor or other facility personnel

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

Qualified applicants must be at least 15 years of age. Applicants under the age of 18 must have a work permit.

Experience: Experience as a pool lifeguard/swim instructor, advanced swimming ability, and prior public contact work experience including working with children is desired but not required.

License/Certificate Requirements: A current American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding is required. Certification must be obtained before hire.

Please note that the City of Laguna Beach will be hosting a lifeguard certification class on
April 29 and 30, 2023. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for 2 years. You may sign up for the class HERE.

**The City is currently offering 50% reimbursement for the certification cost at any valid location. Reimbursements will be provided 90 days after hire.

  • Apply functional reasoning in performing semi-routine functions involving standardized work with some choice of action
  • Exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving a variety of pre-defined duties subject to frequent change
  • Perform lifesaving and rescue activities, including administering CPR and first aid
  • Act quickly calmly and appropriately in emergency situations
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide and to calculate percentages, fractions and decimals

  • Compile written reports to document rescues, injuries, maintenance, water quality, and other incidents as required
