Position Summary
Governors State University seeks to fill the position of Campus Police Officer for the Department of Public Safety team. As part of an assigned team, Campus Police Officers provide campus safety, security, and law enforcement services to the University community. Campus Police Officers provide a wide range of services, including both traditional and non-traditional police services. Officers are required to participate in crime prevention and community-oriented public safety programming. The successful candidate must project a positive image. Campus Police Officers enforce University regulations, local ordinances, and state laws. Officers are first responders to incidents, accidents, and other emergency situations and are responsible for conducting initial and follow-up investigations into significant and criminal incidents. Campus Police Officers will work under the direction of a police supervisor. Overtime hours are anticipated. This is an entry-level, sworn campus police position.

Starting Monthly Salary: is $4,156.53

(This is an unionized position.).

Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED : HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA / TRANSCRIPTS AND /OR COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS , WHICH INCLUDES THE EARNED DEGREE AND CONFERRED DATE , VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS POSITION (See “Special Instructions to Applicants” section below).
  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • No record of conviction of a felony or misdemeanors as identified in the Illinois Police Training Act (50 ILCS 705 et seq.), or a crime involving moral turpitude
  • Eligibility for bonding, if required by the employing institution
  • Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers’ Training course as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, if required by the employing institution. All recruit law enforcement officers who successfully complete this course after September 1, 1984 are required to successfully pass the Law Enforcement Officers’ Certification Examination. (Applicants lacking such training at time of appointment will be required to complete such requirement during, and as a part of, their probationary period of employment in this class.)
  • At least 21 years of age upon employment. (This requirement may be further defined by local recruitment, examination, and employment policies, provided age requirements have been met with regard to all other applicable state and federal regulations in this respect.)


NOTE: Persons who have not successfully completed the mandated firearm training course, as approved and recognized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, must complete the course during their probationary period. Police officers are not authorized to carry a service weapon until successfully completing such training.

Preferred Qualifications
1. Associate or Bachelor’s degree in any field.

2. Criminal Code and procedures of this state.

3. Knowledge of communication skills, oral and written, in order to interact effectively with people from various races, religions and social standings.

4. Aware of the role that the Police Officer plays in campus security and in support of the accomplishment of University goals and objectives.

5. Familiar with limitations and scope of authority of campus Police Officers.

6. Has a history of providing excellent customer service.

7. Excellent communicative skills.

8. Successfully complete a background investigation.

EXAMINATION DETAILS :
This vacancy involves an Electronic Exam, Integrity Test, Structured Oral Interview, and Fitness Exam. The Fitness exam can be waived if one of the following evaluations are completed within 6 months or less prior to the Police Officer Examination process:

1) The Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (P.O.W.E.R. Test) .
2) Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) from Joliet Junior College or Triton College.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT :
Illinois residency required within 180 days of the hire date.
