Job Title: Plant Controls Engineer

Location: Wichita, KS

Onsite: M-F, 8am to 5pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Controls Engineer will function as the site administrator for the plant’s Manufacturing Execution System (MES – Ignition) and OT infrastructure. The role will be responsible for the installation and technical support of PAC/PLC based hardware and software, as well as automation integration. The position will require approximately 50% of the engineer’s time be spent in the manufacturing environment evaluating and implementing improvements. At the same time, they are responsible for ensuring that all equipment is properly designed, delivered, and maintained per OEM and Newell standards. Success will require skilled application in a very hands-on environment as well as project management and leadership abilities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead PAC/PLC and automation controls project integration, including ability to program, serving as expert in related tasks in an Integrated Plant controls architecture
  • Own OT strategy/policy and manage plant floor machine networks in partnership with IT and other stakeholders
  • Optimize, enhance and configure MES for data accuracy and reporting
  • Extract and analyze data from MES to target areas of improvement for direct impact to profit and loss
  • Assist in planning predictive and preventative maintenance with MES data
  • Troubleshooting issues with software, hardware, and processes
  • Work with operations team to analyze business requirements, improve systems, processes and services
  • Training of technical associates on current and new OT/automation equipment and software applications
  • Communicates the status of engineering efforts to both the plant management and other engineering resources throughout the organization
  • Shares “best practice” methods and ideas across plants/organization
  • Perform other duties as required

Climate:

Must work effectively in a fast-paced team environment with constant interruptions. Clearly communicate business goals so associates understand how they contribute to the organization’s success. Extensive short-term planning based on established and changing priorities. Involves ongoing problem solving. Some irregular hours may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Electrical, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering preferred but not required
  • 3-5 years of experience in a related field.
  • Technical proficiency in applicable PAC/PLC, Automation, and simulation software applications such as Rockwell Studio5000 and Ignition.
  • Technical proficiency in networking and managed switch configuration in an Integrated Plant environment
  • Proficient with the expansion of MES and plant telemetry packages, preferably Ignition.
  • Proficiency with controls programming techniques (i.e. procedural, ladder logic, visual/block diagramming)
  • Strong cause-effect analytical abilities to solve problems.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Comfortable presenting to hourly associates as well as all management levels.
  • Willing and able to flex schedule to support all shifts.
  • High energy, self-motivated, enthusiastic, well organized.
  • Working knowledge of lean tools and methodology, strong quantitative, analytical and process redesign skills.
  • Excellent project management skills and communication skills to support employees in a team environment.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training materials.
  • MS Office software skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Minitab.
  • 2D and/or 3D CAD Skills.
  • Bottom line oriented with knowledge of financial functions.
  • High energy, self-motivated, enthusiastic, well organized, and ability to work with minimum supervision.

Preferable Characteristics:

  • Simulation experience with tools such as RoboGuide, PSPICE, SolidWorks, etc.
  • Experience with Fanuc software handling tools (Handling Tool, IRPickTool, PalletPro, and IRVision)
  • Experience with programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Python and Matlab
  • Demonstrated ability to not only use Six Sigma and Lean Principles such as DMAIC, SPC, Cpk, GR&R, Control Plans, DOE, Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Visual Factory, TPM, Kaizen, JIT, Demand Flow, Single Piece Flow, SMED as well as other Continuous Improvement Process tools.
  • Experience with injection molding, blow molding and assembly.
