Certified Peer Specialist

Description:
The position of Certified Peer Specialist is being offered by the Mental Health Association of Columbia Greene Counties, Inc. (MHACG) in conjunction with Columbia County Mental Health Center (CCMHC). The CPS will perform a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages in establishing a therapeutic relationship with the CCMHC and mastery over their own recovery process.
Successful candidates will have the ability to share personal recovery experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries given the job duties and role. The Peer Specialist should demonstrate a personal belief in recovery, as well as a genuine hope and optimism that the clients they are serving will succeed.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Participate as a fully integrated member of the treatment team to champion recovery-oriented, person-centered planning. Meet with individuals who are pursuing mental health recovery for the purpose of supporting their recovery;
  • Provide advocacy with individuals, inside and outside the clinic setting, to support the individual’s personal plan of recovery and wellness;
  • Act as a liaison when barriers arise between an individual and the treatment team;
  • Provide all services in a manner that is strengths-based, gender-responsive, trauma-informed, and that adheres to the core principles of peer services;
  • Assist clients in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy. As well as educate professional staff about the recovery process, and the damaging role stigma can play in the recovery process.
  • Attend and positively participate in required team, agency, and interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Work to increase the level of cultural sensitivity, awareness, and competency regarding Person-Centered and Peer Delivered Services.
  • Receive regular weekly supervision from the identified supervisor; seeking additional supervision whenever necessary. (Minimum requirement of two hours of documented supervision per month.) Also, participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and group supervision as required.
Requirements:
  • At least 2 years experience working in direct service provision in the mental health and/or substance abuse field;
  • Must currently be certified as a NYS Certified Peer Specialist, or obtain certification in 6 months;
Proof of current COVID-19 vaccination required. We may make reasonable accommodations based on an approved medical or religious exemption, and as long as it would not cause an undue hardship on the organization.
All offers are contingent on the candidate’s ability to obtain a Statewide Central Registry and Fingerprint clearance and must have a valid NYS Driver’s License and a clean MVR.
