The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of radio communications network systems. This position provides complete radio support to Department of Adult Corrections across the state for all facilities. Position will review and test new model radios in the 150VHF, 400UHF, 700 and 800 MHz spectrum to determine unit's structural stability, frequency accuracy and systems compatibility with other radio network systems. This position is responsible for the repair of over 30 different models of radios down to their electronic component level. The position is required to utilize power meters, electronic frequency counters, 0'scopes, frequency generators, spectrum analyzers, multi-meters, service monitors and computer software to troubleshoot, isolate and repair radio network equipment. Upon completion of repairs, this position will process all warehouse issues by use of the state warehousing system NCAS. In addition, this position will complete job tickets and enter them into the radio asset maintenance database.

This Network Technician will additionally be responsible for the following:

  • Construction and installation of base station, mobile repeater systems and repeated trunking systems utilizing Internet Protocol, Wide Area Networking, and Local Area Networking - using wired, wireless, and fiber-optic connectivity
  • Making factory modifications on circuit boards as required to correct malfunctioning radio network equipment
  • Performing walk-through of facilities before a project is started or during a project to ensure proper installation and billing of materials
  • Installation, configuration, troubleshooting and repair of data circuits, lines, and switches of the state’s radio communications network systems
  • Troubleshooting will be done over the phone in a help desk environment and at the client’s site or facilities; to end with quick resolutions of problems and key client satisfactions
  • Maintaining the radio network equipment that carries the radio communications data across the state for the operational needs of the Department of Adult Corrections
  • Conducting site survey and area preparation for radio communications network towers in open fields, beside buildings or on rooftops up to 120 feet in height. Site preparation includes surveying the area for longitude, latitude, ground elevation and for locating any obstructions that could interfere with tower construction and operation
  • Assisting in site surveys for dorm repeater units and trunking systems; site survey will include analyzing building construction, exterior area for antenna placement and unit requirements for communications networks
  • Assisting in the inventory of incoming warehouse shipments of various radio models, parts, accessories, and support items that are deemed necessary by the Radio Communications Manager for the department’s communications goals and requirements

Please Note- This position will be required to climb towers or structures up to 120 feet to perform installation, troubleshooting and other tasks. Occasional overnight stay is required for assignments located throughout the state.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and trace circuit paths down to the component level
  • Ability to isolate and repair communications cabling from antenna to base consoles and remote units
  • Demonstrated experience in at least two (2) of the following areas:
  • Power Meters
  • Electronic Frequency Counters
  • O'Scopes
  • Frequency Generators
  • Spectrum Analyzers
  • Multi-Meters
  • Demonstrated experience with installation, maintenance, and repair in at least two (2) of the following:
  • Radio Telecommunications
  • Network Switching Equipment
  • Trunking Systems
  • Radio Repeaters

A valid North Carolina Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire

Management Preferences:

  • Knowledge and experience with FCC rules and regulations relating to the installation, maintenance, and operations of radio transmitting and receiving equipment
  • Knowledge and experience with radio software programming for to-way radios.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of IT experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
