Career Discovery Internship Program

Founded in 2008, the Career Discovery Internship Program provides paid summer internships for college students interested in wildlife careers through a partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Positions are available in a variety of fields, including visitor services, education, natural resource management and more.

To participate, applicants must be incoming college sophomores or juniors. Have access to a personal vehicle. Students who are Black, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic or other racial minority are highly encouraged to apply.

Interns will first attend a week-long orientation held in May and then serve in summer internships tailored to various U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service career tracks for 12 weeks at various sites across the country.

The CDIP National Wildlife Refuge Operations Technician will work directly with the refuge management, biological and habitat staff to improve and restore critical habitats for plants and wildlife at the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge in northern Vermont and New Hampshire. The position will work side by side with professional U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff throughout the season on advanced forest management and aquatic resource habitat improvement projects. Additionally, the position will assist with day-to-day operational tasks. The Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge is located in 22 locations throughout Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The position will have the opportunity to travel throughout northern New England within the 7.2 million acre Connecticut River watershed to work on high priority wildlife monitoring and habitat improvement/restoration projects. Eligibility:

  • US Citizens or Permanent Residents
  • Incoming Sophomore or Junior in college.
  • Access to a personal vehicle during your internship.
  • students with an interest in the conservation industry, who are of Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, African American, Hispanic, or of other racial minority descent.
  • Available to serve in the Northeast, Midwest, or Southwest: May 22nd- Aug 20th

A single story (ranch) house is located next to the Nulhegan Basin office. The house is a five bedroom, two bathroom building. This position will be provided a single occupancy room for your own privacy. The house is 15 miles from Island Pond, Vermont (the closest town). The Nulhegan River and hiking trail directly abuts the house. There are spectacular views of the Nulhegan Basin from the property surrounding the house. The building will be used by other seasonal trail crew and biological research staff. The building is fully furnished. All you need is a pillow, linens, toiletries and your own food. The building now has an electric mini-split cooling system for air conditioning in the summer months.
Cell service is limited. AT&T has the best coverage. Wifi is provided.
