Position: Medical Assistant
Reports To: Practice Manager
Position Status: Non-exempt

Position Summary
As a member of the Care Team, the Medical Assistant position is responsible for a variety of clinical tasks both during and outside of provider visits. All staff are required to document their work in the electronic health record, treat patients in a timely and professional manner, and keep their work areas properly stocked, cleaned, and in compliance with applicable regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities
Technical requirements
  • Accurately perform basic patient assessment activities (e.g. heights, weights, temps and blood pressure) based on existing protocols or provider requests.
  • Administer patient screenings and assessments as required according to demographics and needs of each patient.
  • Assists with procedures and other services Collect and test specimens as required (urine, sputum, pregnancy test, etc.).
  • Administers immunizations and injections according to PrimeCare guidelines/procedures
  • Room patients for their exams and maintain responsibility for the patient care process until the end of each visit.
  • Provide care coordination as per team-based guidelines/procedures
  • Place and process orders and referrals as per team-based guidelines/procedures

Compliance and documentation
  • Thoroughly, accurately, and promptly document all service rendered in the electronic health record for every patient.
  • Perform all services according to the policies and procedures of PrimeCare. Notify the Practice Manager or his/her designee of any variation in service provision in a timely manner.
  • Be knowledgeable of and in compliance with CLIA, OSHA and HIPAA regulations for safety, infection control, equipment operation, confidentiality, and other applicable areas (e.g. patient identification and standard precautions).
  • Run instrument and test controls, monitor and replace needle and syringe containers, maintain and sterilize equipment and instruments, monitor and maintain inventories, and perform other tasks as needed to maintain a safe and well-functioning work environment.
  • Participate in proficiency testing as required by PrimeCare or departmental policy to ensure that proper standards of care are being maintained.
  • Documents all immunizations, injections and medication administration in electronic health record according to PrimeCare policy
  • Responsible for proper storage of immunizations. Maintains refrigeration temperature according to VFC/VFA standards and documents in temperature log.
  • Keeps inventory and proper log tally sheets for VFC/VFA program so the order balances.
  • Monitors and acts on electronic health record in-basket messages.
  • Participates in provider/MA huddle as well as team/health center and organizational meetings.
  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objective and maintain good employee relations.

Patient care, customer service, and other universal working standards
  • Monitor and update work lists and queues to ensure that no patients are subjected to unnecessary delays.
  • Greet all patients in a kindly spoken and courteous manner, inform them of the status of their visit (where they should go next, when their visit is over, when they can expect to get results of tests, etc.), and thank them for utilizing PrimeCare.
  • Regularly check mail, e-mail and voicemail and respond promptly and professionally to all inquiries.
  • Attend to shared responsibilities in each work area, including answering phones, cleaning, stocking, and organizing common work areas, and assisting with orientation and training of other employees as needed.
  • Work a reasonable schedule, which may include an assignment at any location and during any of the hours that PrimeCare provides services.
  • Communicates with other Care Team members (nurses, lab, care managers, case managers, behavioral health) when patient needs services from those individuals.
  • Translate for limited English proficiency patient/clients in the absence of an interpreter, if bilingual.
  • Perform other tasks required in support of the medical providers and nursing staff, but which are not detailed within this job description.

Required Skills or Abilities
  • Basic patient care skills required. Observation and assessment skills preferred.
  • Able to work as a member of an interdisciplinary Care Team.
  • Good physical stamina and an ability to be standing most of the day.
  • Good interpersonal skills are a necessity, including an ability to work well with the variety of ages, cultures, and temperaments represented among PrimeCare staff and patients, treating other with kindness and professionalism in all they do.
  • Commitment to demonstrating personal integrity through punctuality, honesty, an ability to follow instructions, proper attention to detail in all work matters, and a willingness to learn from others.
  • An ability to work independently, takes initiative, and set priorities in accordance with the needs and mission of the clinic.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing or stressful conditions, including unanticipated changes to working schedules or locations.
  • Adequate written and verbal communication skills for communicating coherently and professionally with patients and co-workers.
  • Conscientious of departmental and organizational policies and procedures, and able to embrace and personify the mission of PrimeCare.

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to move around the clinic site 50% of the time.
  • Constantly operates a computer, computer printer, copy machine, and telephone.
  • Occasionally positions self to maintain exertion of physical strength to move objects of 10 pounds from one level to another.
  • Must be able to transport from one site to another.
  • Must be able to cover other shifts as necessary
  • Ability to move as needed to perform necessary nursing skills such as wound care, injections, and other procedures.

Required Knowledge, Experience, or Licensure/Registration
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program required.
  • Experience in a medical practice, laboratory, hospital or other clinical setting.
  • Registered or Certified Medical Assistant recognition preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish or English/Polish, preferred
