Mechanical Journeyman Apprentice
Location: Support Services Center - 1339 N. Lansing Tulsa, OK. 74106
Salary: $18.24 / hour - $21.86 / hour
Status: Full Time
Schedule:
Flexible schedule and availability required;
Weekday evenings 2pm - 9pm;
Occasional Days, and weekends required;

As an apprentice, under the direct supervision of a fully licensed First Class Stationary Engineer, operates and maintains mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment for Central or branch libraries; performs general labor as well as landscaping, irrigation, janitorial services, cosmetic maintenance, and vehicle fleet maintenance as requested. The duration of the apprenticeship is up to three (3) years following the guidance provided in the City of Tulsa’s Code of Ordinances, Title 59 – Mechanical Code (chapter 2). Upon completion of this apprenticeship, the apprentice will be eligible to take the First Class Engineer’s License examination. After attaining the license, the apprentice will be promoted to First Class Stationary Engineer starting at $21.86/hr. If selected candidate already holds, or has met all requirements to take the First Class Stationary Engineer license examination, they are eligible to start at $21.86 . This is a safety sensitive position.
  • Operates, maintains, inspects and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including boilers and chillers;
  • Assures compliance with City, State and Federal regulations/codes and promotes safe operations of physical plant;
  • Operates, designs, installs and maintains building plumbing systems, including sprinkler systems, pumps, and fountains;
  • Operates, designs, installs and maintains building electrical systems including lighting systems, fixtures, and emergency lighting systems;
  • Maintains building life safety and security programs, to include building fire prevention systems;
  • Assists IT department as needed to install data wiring and computer equipment;
  • Maintains and repairs library vehicles and bookmobile generator;
  • Performs routine maintenance duties such as painting, cleaning, and repairing furnishings and equipment;
  • Purchases approved materials, equipment and supplies;
  • Performs landscaping and janitorial services as needed;
  • Performs the following Safety Sensitive functions:
    • Operation of company owned vehicles, forklift, heavy equipment, machinery, and power tools;
    • Extracts, compresses, handles and/or transports potentially volatile, flammable, or combustible components;
    • Repairs, maintains and monitors the performance of equipment and machinery
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Familiarity with schematics and blueprints;
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems and ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and communicate issues to the Engineer;
  • Ability to use electric hand tools, pneumatic tools, welding equipment, trade-specific tools, power tools, and other equipment used for facility maintenance and repair;
  • Communication skills in person, by electronic communications, and by telephone;
  • Registration as an Apprentice Operator with the City of Tulsa (may be obtained upon hire);
  • Current EPA Refrigerant Handling Certificate and Lift Truck Certificate required (may be obtained upon hire);
  • Valid Oklahoma driver's license and acceptable driving record required.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required;
  • One or more years of related experience required;
  • Experience with HVAC, Chillers, and Boiler systems preferred;
  • Or an equivalent combination of technical training, education, and/or experience.
Physical Activity & Environmental Conditions
Considerable physical exertion, such as regularly lifting of heavy items (up to 80 lbs) and/or assuming awkward positions on a highly frequent basis.
Involves routine exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions.
May involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions; involves special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines
Routine, in-town travel using Library-owned vehicles is required
