Job Summary:
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) PRN is responsible for the total nursing care of assigned patients in accordance with physicians' orders under the guidance and supervision of the nurse in charge.
Duties and Essential Job Functions:
1. Delivers quality nursing care to assigned group of patients while minimizing the risk of infection, contamination, harm, or injury.
2. Records patients' medical information and vital signs.
3. Monitors, records and reports symptoms and changes in patients' conditions.
4. Conducts specified laboratory tests.
5. Maintains accurate, detailed reports and records.
6. Completes documentation to meet regulatory standards, policies, and procedures.
7. Provides patient education directed towards identified knowledge deficits.
8. Guides, educates, and provides leadership as a preceptor to new LVNs and CMAs following 6 months of employment.
9. Participates in performance improvement process initiatives within JPS Health Network and assigned department.
10. Performs all other job related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Vocational Nursing.
Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
- Current licensure to practice vocational nursing in the State of Texas by the Board of Nurse Examiners and must maintain licensure throughout employment.
- Current JPS recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and must be maintained throughout employment.
- ACLS within 3 months of hire (required in Emergency Department and Critical Care only).
- EKG test passed within 90 days of hire date and maintained throughout employment (required in Emergency
Department and Critical Care only).
- Completion of Pediatric Life Support (PALS) within 90 days of hire and maintains credentialing throughout employment for the Emergency Department.
- Completion of unit specific competency based orientation program within 90 days, if applicable.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification must be obtained within 6 weeks of employment (for
Inpatient Women’s Services only).
- S.T.A.B.L.E. certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment (for Inpatient Women’s Services only).
- Approved Education and Training in Non-Violent Crisis De-escalation must be obtained within 90 days of hire date and maintained throughout employment for the Emergency Department.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- 6 plus months of nursing experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of chronic conditions, medical, and disease processes.
- Knowledge of the nursing standards and skills required to provide care of service appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned units.
- Knowledge of office procedures, technology, and equipment required to perform all manner of clinical nursing work.
- Skill in solving mathematic computations needed to accurately calculate medication dosages and IV drips.
- Skill in accurate documentation and record management including data collection and typing.
- Skill in prioritizing and meeting deadlines including an ability to take initiative and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor to both internal and external customers and promote good interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to prioritize work, organize and manage time effectively.
- Ability to make decisions, problem solve, and grasp new ideas.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion and concern for patients and the desire to be of service.

Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged standing, sitting, walking, reading, writing, talking, use of computer.
- Hearing ability for verbal communication via telephone systems, and person–to–person and to perform assessments such as obtaining blood pressure, cardiac or breath sounds.
- Clear concise speaking ability to provide information and instruction.
- Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
- Manual and tactile dexterity for palpation, use of computer keyboard/typing, writing, handling/sorting objects and forms.
- Flexibility and body movement for bending, crouching, walking, sitting, kneeling, standing, reaching, lifting, and moving objects and equipment (approximately 25 lbs. or more with assistance).
- Able to meet physical demands of the job with assistive or adaptive devices or reasonable accommodations.
Work Environment:
- Work is indoors and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours, and/or overtime hours, and/or occasional weekend hours on short notice.
- Local travel to duties may be performed at multiple sites.
- Exposure to environment temperature changes, hazardous/noxious fumes, fetid smells, air/blood borne pathogens such as HIV, Hep. B, TB, and other contagious diseases.
- Environment is noisy, involves frequent interruptions or distractions.
- Duties subject to stressful pressures and deadlines.
- Wearing of uniform or a specific style/type of clothing and jewelry/accessories limitations or restriction may be required.
