Job Title: Lower School Dean of StudentsFLSA Classification: ExemptResponsible to: Head of Lower SchoolLast Modified: February 2023Position Summary: The Dean of Students is responsible for working closely with the Head of Lower School, the Director ofStudent Life and members of the Lower School Student Support team on matters related to the operationof the Lower School. This person is responsible for working in collaboration with the Lower Schooladministration, Support Team and faculty on matters related to the development of a positive andinclusive school culture and climate, student safety, supervision and discipline, and student leadershipopportunities. This position requires a willingness to work closely with lower school-aged boys, teachersand families, as well as a clear understanding of early and late childhood development and ageappropriate pedagogy for boys. The Dean of Students position benefits from an individual who is up todate on best practice in positive behavior support systems, approaches to elementary aged studentdiscipline protocols, is professional, highly organized, calm in stressful situations, capable of making gooddecisions, and possesses outstanding verbal and written communication skills.Essential Duties and Responsibilities?

Oversee discipline in the Lower School, including continuing to evaluate and adjust the systemand protocols to be equitable, just and to reflect best practice for elementary age students.? Actively supervise Lower School recess and lunch.? Work in collaboration with the Director of Student Life to support faculty in implementingclassroom management strategies that reflect a positive behavior approach.? Collaborate with members of the Lower School administration and Student Support team tounderstand and most effectively address student behavior.?

Support Lower School faculty in understanding early and late childhood behavior and how toeffectively manage student behavior in accordance with the Lower School behavior policy throughprofessional development, modeling and teacher coaching.? Address student conflicts and behavior that rise to the level of involving the Dean of Students inaccordance with the Lower School behavior protocol in a comprehensive and timely manner,including communication with families, teachers and the Head of Lower School.? Document and record student disciplinary actions.? Teach one fifth grade class (four sections), if needed.?

Possesses an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion and the implementation of thoseprinciples in independent schools.? Other duties, as assigned.
