Position Summary:

Administers nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse or other medical supervisor. Provides basic medical care, including changing bandages, administering medication, and collecting specimens; and otherwise ensures the health, comfort and safety of residents. Monitors and reports changes in patient's condition to supervisor.


This position does not have direct reports.

Scheduling Support

Supports meetings by scheduling, inviting, developing agendas, taking notes, and tracking follow up items:

  • Makes medical and dental appointments for residents and prepare weekly medical calendar
  • Schedules new admission, physical, dental and follow-up appointments and ensures they are up to date
  • Schedules consults for children
  • Prepares and assists DON with nursing schedules

Custodian of Records & Reporting

  • Creates new records for new admits to include:
    • All records obtained
    • Chart created
    • Admit checklists completed
  • Completes consultation paperwork for outside appointments
  • Ensures children’s TB tests are up to date
  • Ensures children’s immunizations are up to date, maintains immunization schedule,
  • Files, types and documents in a timely and accurate manner; computer generation of reports and databases
  • Maintains medical records for new clients and reports of x-rays received or requested
  • Collects data, develops reports, and disseminates to appropriate parties as scheduled or needed, conducting analysis as appropriate to include reports such as:
    • Med Errors
    • Infection Control
    • First Aid Kits/FP
    • Med Room Checklists
    • Cleaning/Disinfecting
  • Maintains and updates children’s Med Problem lists, first aid kits checklist, and outside vendor contracts
  • Ensures discharge packets are complete for all discharge clients
  • Reviews the documentation of height, weight, and vital signs of the clients on a monthly basis; identifies values outside of baseline and takes appropriate action to notify the DON and Medical Director; and takes immediate action to correct process issues to ensure compliance with policy
  • Provides administrative support the DON as assigned to include duties such as gathering stats, writing / updating policies & procedures, graphing performance improvement data, preparing reports, etc.

Clerical & Admin Support

Performs administrative functions including making and receiving phone calls, taking messages, correspondence, and ordering supplies:

  • Checks medical inventories and order all supplies as needed in a timely manner
  • Updates forms, prepares correspondence, files and copies
  • Maintains all office equipment in working order, orders all office supplies, and restocks paper
  • Order and restocks all hygiene and medical supplies for the village
  • Orders children’s glasses and/or sends for repair
  • Ensures biohazard containers are emptied and picked up by outside contracting company
  • Conducts interviews with DON
  • Corresponds with parents and legal guardians when needed and/or asked by clients’ current Childhelp Social Worker. (i.e., regarding insurance information, scheduling of a medical appointment that a parent / legal guardian wishes to attend, etc.)
  • Attends various meetings

Care Delivery

Performing nursing duties as stipulated by licensed scope of practice to include:

  • Admissions (conducts assessments and facilitates required notification as needed
  • Discharges (conducts assessments, prepares and issues medication instruction forms followed by verbal instruction and email notification to the guardian
  • Does pre-screening for physical exams of staff and children to include height, weight and vital signs.
  • Administers immunizations and tuberculosis tests.
  • Performs first-aid and handle emergencies.
  • Administers New Hire TB testing (PPD)
  • Serves as back up to and otherwise assists Nursing Supervisor as a nurse

Medication Administration

  • Follows all policies and procedures regarding medication administration
  • Follows established schedule for the administration of medications to clients accurately and efficiently (including controlled/non-controlled) within the facility
  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered by the doctor, monitor for side effects
  • Prepares documentation for medication administration as required to include signing the MARs, creating PRN documentation, conducts pain assessments and re-assessments, as well as New Med Monitoring Forms
  • Prepared medications for destruction by marking discontinued, expired, damaged, and/or contaminated medications for destruction and segregating/storing in a separate locked and labeled container until such time as they are able to be destroyed.
  • Documents medication administration policies, procedures, practices and audits in the performance improvement manual

Miscellaneous

  • Assists the Medical Department Coordinator by ensuring the maintenance of the Village health program for the children on an on-going basis.
  • Obtains authorization, accurately track & monitor the medical billing process.
  • Teaches classes (First Aid, CPR, and Medical Protocol) and medical orientation as required
  • Carries out other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Understanding

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse in the State of California
  • Must possess current California Driver's License and have a safe driving record
  • Must possess current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Ability to successfully pass fingerprint background screening through the Department of Justice, FBI and Child Abuse Index
  • Ability to understand and solve problems by applying intermediate analytical skills to include collecting all the relevant information and data needed to address the problem; organizing, classifying and synthesizing the data into fundamental issues; from the information, identifying the most probable causes of the problem; reducing the information down into manageable components; identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected; and, identifying the options and solutions for addressing the problems analyzed

Physical Demands

  • Ability to frequently stand, see, hear, speak, and be physically flexible; occasionally sits walk, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs., carry, run and drive; and at times may bend, climb, squat, kneel, push/pull
