The New Jersey Attorney General's Office, Division on Civil Rights, is looking for three (3) Legal Specialists to join its Investigative Unit. The position can be based in Trenton, Cherry Hill, Newark, or Atlantic City, NJ - applicants can select their location preference. The annual salary for this position will be $100,000.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

The Division on Civil Rights (DCR) is charged with enforcing the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, New Jersey Family Leave Act, and Fair Chance in Housing Act. DCR has a team of neutral investigators and legal specialists who investigate, process, and issue findings on complaints of discrimination and bias-based harassment.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under limited supervision of the Chief of Investigations, Director and Deputy Director of Division on Civil Rights (DCR), the Legal Specialist will:

  • Guide the investigative process to ensure that cases are efficiently and correctly processed and decided.
  • Based on an evaluation of the potential merits of the case, craft an investigative plan and work with investigative staff to efficiently execute the plan.
  • Obtain and evaluate relevant evidence.
  • Ensure that agency determinations are legally sound, well-written and supported by the relevant evidence.
  • Draft and review settlement agreements and, where appropriate, determine which cases might benefit from mediation.
  • Identify cases that warrant a full investigation and/or may present a potential pattern or practice of discrimination and allocate staff resources accordingly.
  • Actively manage a full caseload and, working with investigative staff, move several investigations forward at the same time with limited supervision.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school with Juris Doctor (J.D.) or a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) degree OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of experience involving legal or legislative research, drafting of rules, regulations, amendments, and/or the interpretation of statutes.
  • Appointees currently matriculating in an accredited law school as an LL.B or J.D. candidate may substitute such enrollment for the three (3) years of required experience on a year-for-year basis.

OTHER KEY FACTORS:

  • Statewide travel required for work responsibilities.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
  • All offers of employment are conditional subject to the applicant agreeing to and then passing a background check that may include fingerprinting.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate commitment to, knowledge of, and experience in state or federal civil rights’ laws; a strong commitment to a New Jersey free of discrimination and bias-based harassment; excellent legal research and writing skills; ability to analyze complex legal problems and recommend and implement effective solutions. Preference will also be given to applicants who possess a J.D.
